Have you ever been listening to a piece of music that you have never heard before, and found the intro to be familiar yet still not really had a clue what it was until it progressed into a brilliant cover of a well known track.
Two such tracks that totally threw me by the intros are.. Roy Buchanans version of Hey Joe.
Also a version of House Of The Rising Sun by Vangelis and Demis Rousos.

Any others spring to mind ?.

I can't believe there's another person who is familiar with Roy Buchanan's version of Hey Joe. That version absolutely blows me away. Anybody who has never heard it is missing one of the most amazing guitar solos ever recorded. Roy was a fire breathing dragon on guitar....

Hmm....

They are out there. I need to think about a really good one.

But....

I can tell you one of the most UNEXPECTED covers of all time, and I had no clue what it was until I heard the lyrics.

Cake's version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive"!!!!

Different! I kind of like it, but then, I've always dug "Cake", so...

btw....

What happened? I know you're from the U.K., but yesterday you had a Scottish accent! LOL

;-)

I was quite taken by Buchanan's version of that tune, too.

Good call on Cake, btw, Craig!

One of the more unusual ones I can recall is "Jumpin' Jack Flash," I think it was covered by Parlaiment/Funkadelic.

Others are "America" by Yes, "Get a Job" (Oh Bladdee Oh Bladah) & "Feelings" by Offspring, "The Letter" by Joe Cocker (or any other cover by him LOL), "Jesus Came Down To GA" by Phish. Sid Viscious' "My Way" is worthy of mention.

Hey Craig - Cake also covered "Guitar Man" (Bread) & "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps," (Doris Day) 2 more quite unusual covers.

Ok, some of those I haven't heard, gotta check them out.

btw...

Here's an interesting tidbit for you... My wife's dad, was a member of the band, that became "Bread". He co-wrote their first hit single, but when the band split in half, he had no idea they would get a couple new members, and then become "Bread" one of the most successful bands of all time! I think their previous name was "The Eleventh Hour" or something like that. They had parents in the military, so they got some big gigs on Military bases because of it. At one of those gigs, they opened for someone they never dreamed possible... Jimi Hendrix!!!

Hendrix heard them getting a sound check and came over to my wife's dad, and introduced himself, and said "You got a really good voice man. Mind if I play with you guys on your set?" - "Uhh.... sure Jimi" ... "Cool man, what's the first song on your set list?" - Her dad, choked a little when he looked at his set list and set... "It's your song" - Jimi asked "Which one?" and he responded "Foxy Lady" - Jimi said "Cool" and her dad said "But you sing it... that's your song!" and Jimi said "No man, that's your set, and you got a great voice, YOU SING IT! And I'll play along!" Her dad nearly sh*t his pants!!!

He never got into a full time band after that, but hey, can you beat that for a memory of playing in a band? Playing with Jimi Hendrix, and he wants YOU to sing "Foxy Lady" while he plays guitar with you?

Wow!

But when "Bread" started gertting hit after hit, I bet he'd wish he stayed in that band!

He had always showed an interest in my band before, and then I learned why.... cause it was close to his heart, from his own experiences. I had known about Hendrix playing with him, but it was only after being married to his daughter for a few years that he opened up about how the group he was in, was the foundational members of what would become "Bread". Even my wife didn't know about that. He's ex-military, one of those guys who holds things close to the vest, and doesn't brag about stuff. It blew us away, when he started telling us some of those stories!

I jammed about 12 yrs ago with a guy who had just returned from touring Japan with Dave Matthews. They broke up right after their return, & this guy didn't have much good to say about DM. I didn't much care for all of his negativity, & haven't heard anything about him since, but he was a pretty good guitar player. He did say that DM was about to get his big break. Looks like he was right.

I remember seeing Buchanan doing "Hey Joe" live on PBS many years ago. All I can recall is that it was cool and much different from the original.

Cool Hendrix story Craig. The man was not only a genius but a nice guy as well.

I must nominate Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues" for a radically different cover.

The Cure did a version of Purple Haze that I thought was totally different in its own way.

I agree. He was already famous at that time. Very humble of him. He really did CARE about the music, and enjoyed playing with others.

Hendrix will always be my favorite.

People have and will, come along and do new things, and amazes us, but there will NEVER be another Hendrix. He is an icon. He lives forever, and will never be forgotten.

Rock and Roll baby!

Spot on with the 'humble', our basist had the privelage of playing with Hendrix once. He also uses the word humble to describe his manner.
Hey as we are on the subject of interesting covers, try checking out The Good The Bad And The Ugly theme by the GB Ukulele orchestra. It is on you tube, sorry not sure how to post links. Very entertaining and totaly non pretentious, humerous cover.
Enjoy.

Freddie King's version of CCR's Lowdown In Lodi, Al Green's version of How Can You Mend A Broken Heart (Beegees), The Bluefin Tuna Band's version of Blues With A Feeling (Little Walter) which I hope is on our upcoming CD...
