First we successfully completed our second gig at The Hideout in Spring Hill, Ks. There was a different, younger bartender there last night. Turns out he's the grandson of the owner. I left my band banner there and retrieved it today. The owner was there and she told me her grandson called her this morning and said we were awesome, they have to have us back again. We're talking about a New Year's Eve gig. Haven't done one in YEARS. It's also a great reference to get other gigs. I just tell the owner of a different venue to call The Hideout and ask about how we did. Then today I went fishing in the afternoon. Decided to go to Miami County State Fishing Lake, which is in the county directly south of Johnson County, Ks (where I reside). Two years ago this small impoundment (approx 60 acres) was flooded by an adjacent river. Last year the fishing there was TERRIBLE so I didn't go back until today. What a pleasant surprise. I easily caught 50 fish, mostly small bass, small bluegill, one small redear sunfish, BUT a half dozen VERY NICE 10-13 inch Crappie, a few VERY NICE Bluegill (.5 lbs +), and lost a VERY NICE Largemouth easily over four pounds, all within a few hours of fishing.
What a nice weekend for me. Another very successful gig and a big surprise at a rebounding lake. I talked with the fish and game warden and he said the electro-sampling this year showed a very surprising number of nice fish. Looks like I'll be headed back there soon...

Fishing is funny to me. I like to fish in a situation like the White Bass run in the rivers in late winter / early spring. Almost guaranteed catch.
I can sit in the woods all day "hunting" not fire a round and still enjoy myself. But for me fishing without fish just plain sucks.

I seldom fish without catching anything. The secret to ending fishless outings: Use high quality lures that offer the most visibility and the smoothest action in the water. That's right, smooth steady action, not crazy unnatural movement. Use the lightest quality line you can get away with. I use Stren high visibilty gold 2 or 4 pound test. My number one lure of choice: Mepps spinners. I start almost every fishing trip with Mepps Black Fury spinners, usually chartreause or orange dots. Then I try Mepps XD spinners, again green or orange choices first. Another outstanding lure is Charlie Brewer Crappie Sliders. I just cast out and reel any lure in so it stays just off the bottom. I seldom slow down or speed up the retrieve, slow and steady. White bass are great fun to catch, one of my favorite gamefish. They are a close relative to Striped Bass. Both species are considered open water. Both species also are triggered by the color blue. Mepps Rainbow colored Aglia spinners have blue, pink, and silver coloration. They work VERY WELL on White Bass. You can also get Aglias in metalic blue but you'll never find them in stores, you have to send away for them. The Rainbow Aglias are available in Cabela's. Bass Pro Shops might stock them but I don't remember. Sassy Shads with blue backs are also VERY GOOD for white bass. Of all the fish I catch white bass seem to be fussiest over the size of the lure. I carry most spinners in different sizes. Sometimes the white ignore the smallest (0) size, sometimes they ignore other sizes. You just have to experiment...

I've never hunted nor do I think I ever will. I respect people who do hunt. If I ever did try it I think I would enjoy quail, turkey, pheasant, grouse, or woodcock hunting. Have you ever seen a woodcock? I've seen a few (they are some weird looking small gamebirds) and when they take off flying from the ground (where they usually are found) they look like darting little cannonballs. You'd have to be a helluva good shot to bag one. There's definitely got to be some fine shooting skills involved with bird hunting. I definitely wouldn't want to sit all day in one spot hoping for a deer (or other game) to get close enough to take a shot at. An old friend of mine told me about a huge buck he spent YEARS trying to take down on private land. He had seen this buck many times and it had an enormous pair of antlers. Anyway one day he spent sitting motionless in a tree blind and the buck strode right underneath the tree. Just as he was about to pull the trigger his hunting buddy came over and the buck bolted away. He never did get this buck. That would have REALLY pissed me off...

We're doing pretty good man. Our new drummer picked up REALLY fast so we didn't really skip a beat.

It turns out that the House of Blues really likes our band. We're scheduled to play two shows there within a month of each other, and I guess there's a possibility that we might be playing poolside regularly at the Hard Rock Hotel starting next spring. But it's not for sure. I'll have to cross my fingers on that one. We'll be playing in Hawaii next spring as well.. A whole lotta things coming up.

We're gonna spend Dec. getting ready to record a new CD with new songs. We're generating the money for that right now. I'm excited about getting in the studio with this band. I'll be singing 2 of my original songs on the CD.

So the snow-ball just keeps rolling (knock on wood). But I could hit a snag coming up here. My house is in foreclosure. Not sure if I can pull out of it with the Construction industry being what it is these days. Since the band practices here, we might have to figure out an alternative place to practice yet again..

Sounds great Bob, Im glad everything is falling in place. It seems from your post that you have been frustrated for awhile, so get out and rock the house man.

You mention deer hunting, this past summer on some of the land my family owns the farmer got a deer permit cause they were eating the crops. My son was supposed to kill 30 does to cut the population. He did it for a coupld of days and bailed so I got to go out every day in the morning and evening and drive thru the farms and kill legally does and leave them laying. I would get 2-3 in the mornings and ussually 1-2 in the evenings. I didnt realize how bad the problem was and that I would kill as many as I did. We wound up killing 36 all together. You have to keep a record and hand it in. Ty the game warden called me and said I had done so good that he would refer me to other people to slay their deer. I said no thanks. At a much younger age I was a Deer Slayer for about 3 yrs. I took an awful lot of deer in that period, and it actually got too easy. So I took up bow hunting for a while and wasnt very good, then the last day of bow season I was coming in and hit not one but two huge bucks with my truck. Crazy!

Man that hurts my heart. I never shot a deer I did not eat.
I understand the farmers plight, but I am sure there are plenty of men who would respect his land and eat the deer.
I'l have to admit though, I have done the same with hogs.
Dove hunting is oneof my wife and I favorite adventures together.

No I don't think I know that bird unless it goes by another back home. My team had a player named woodcock some years ago lol!

To be honest and this sounds kinda namby. I really don't think I could hunt unless I was hungry? I caught a good few roosters from a good distance, perhaps 150 feet with my home made slingshot when they drove me nuts. I guess it must have hurt too from the noises I heard but I didn't shoot to eat as it were.

I used to know a whole bunch of hunters and for the most part they were the most down to earth and nice people that I'd ever met to be honest. I learned a lot from these guys and really miss them to be honest.

Shredd, playing poolside sounds too cool. Getting paid to play music while gorgeous women in skimpy bathing suits dance around you is good work if you can get it...and then go to Hawaii to do even more? Where do I sign up for that gig?
