I'm looking your site over, Vinny.
It looks okay, I guess. Nothing really jumps out at me. I read a cpl of the articles, but saw nothing really new, but then again, I've been at this for awhile, so perhaps it's new for others.
Is the workshop listed in your special events section just a one-time thing, or are you taking it on the road?
Yeah, I can see that you're just starting out. I also see that you're in TN. I'd really like to hear what JW has to say about it all, but judging from how busy he keeps himself, I dunno if he'd have time to check you out either in-person or o/l.
Ya know, you prolly should contact JW123. He has a wealth of info, advice, & experience that would surely enrich what you're trying to do.

If all of the service providers work together in cooperation instead of competiton, we can help every artist who is serious about a career in music!
That's very noble, & completely at odds with every business model I can think of. (That means I'm kinda for it, Vinny.) It's refreshing to see someone so interested in helping.
Good luck with this.

Hey! I just realized something! If you DO manage to "unify the indy market," it won't be "indy" anymore, cuz everyone will be affiliated!
You BEAST! You aren't trying to make things better for indies, but trying to ERASE the concept of "indy" altogether!!!
AWHOOOOO000ooooo! Yip! GROWL! Snarl! Woof woof!

Um...I see that my silly attempts at humor are lost, here...
I think what you're doing is admirable, Vinny. It's obvious that you are no scoundrel, but are trying to make thiongs better for us, the little guys.
I wouldn't exactly call you a superhero, either.
Just out of curiouslity, how would your legal assistance work? I had some issues with copyright & my old band, & I think Craig has had some, as well. If we were to join your lil cooperate, what could we expect from you, as these problems arise, specifically?
This kinda sounds like a musician's version of AARP to me, which isn't necessarilly a bad thing at all.

Copyright is a tricky thing. 1. The federal government only recognizes the actual proceedural copyright, where you file your papers and pay your fee and you are listed in the Library of Congress. 2. SOME courts will accept the "poor man's copyright"; a sealed delivered piece of mail, the postmark being the copyright date.
The fact remains, that without the legal federal copyright, no one HAS to accept your other methods. Whoever holds the copyright, owns the music. If someone federally copyrights something you wrote, you will be hard pressed to get it overturned, though having original, dated work in your computer can be very useful. If you write something on a computer, the original start date cannot be changed, however, since you can change the text of a file without changing the date, it doesn't hold up as well as a hand written original will that has been poor man copyrighted, but again, nothing trumps the federal copyright.
Now, you can take all your work and put it in a compilation and only have to pay 1 copyright fee, but I strongly suggest that you DO that. Anything RECORDED, automatically belongs to those in the recording. If you have a solo recording of all your things, that will hold up better against most attempts at stealing it, but you are still safer if you do the fed thing.
Remember also that the copyright date is the date you Send the application, even if it takes them 6 months to process it. The fed is slow, but still your only TRUE protection from the wolves that'll steal your sh*t. Even Taxi recommends copyrighting everything before submitting.
I did have a fed legal copyright, but the guys were distributing it without my permission, & selling it at no profit.
Lawyers look for profit, & there was none. They wouldn't nother with my "little problem" without huge outlays of money on my part, which I don't have.
Yeah, justice is only for those who can afford it in this country!

You a member of ASCAP and BMI? If so, you still get paid for every distributed copy throug them. The guys selling it are responsible for the fees. Thats the only way to recover for a non-profit theft. How did they obtain the copies to sell? If you gave free downloads, then you pretty much shot yourself in the foot. If they purchased a copy and can prove that they made 0 profit on the distribution, then your only recourse is ASCAP and BMI fees. HOWEVER, if YOU can prove they made a profit of a penny or more, you could win in court and they would owe you restitution...but the cost of going through all of that is extreme, so you would have to hope to recover alot. The cost of the forensic accountant to prove they made a profit will be substantial. If you are with ASCAP and BMI, all you need to do is keep track of the sales, make sure they get reported to both, and they'll send you a check.
Never joined either. What they did was change the CD, take my name off of it, & sell it after I told them I did not want ti sold on that CD. I did have full legal rights to have my material withdrawn from the 2nd CD, according to what I read in copyright law, & they did use them & sell them illegally...but...no profit = no restitution, & they eventually quit selling them, so I gave up.
It doesn't look in any way to be tricky or complicated to me. I read the law. I was wronged. My material was illegally distributed, & I was not given proper credit either for authorship or performances. They should be fined, & made to pay me some sort of restitution, at the very least.
