Joe was playing the rhythms, along with Brad. But they brought in a couple of gunslingers to lay down the leads.

In an interview Steve Hunter was asked to recall playing on the track (he does the first "studio" lead, Dick Wagner does the second "live" lead"). He said he just played along with the song to warm up. At the end of the tune he said he was ready to record and the producer said "you're done, we already recorded it". So what you hear is just him warming up!

Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner also played the leads on Lou Reed's live "Sweet Jane" and Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies", as well as Peter Gabriel's first album. Bad mofos.
