I think it's relative to where you're at. Here in San Antonio there are a few songs that are covered by nearly all the bands playing any covers.

Kings of Leon - Use Somebody
Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire
Deftones - Change in the house of flies
Theory of a Deadman - Bad Girlfriend
Tool - Sober
Pantera - This Love
Seether - Careless Whisper
Jet - Are you gonna be my girl?
Saving Abel - Addicted
Candlebox - Far Behind

Just to name a few.

Heroin Girl is a classic.

Far behind is not.

Poor Candlebox, everyone dumps on them these days..

Ok I'll do something different, heres some covers that have been done by big time acts of classic tunes and they've mixed em up to their own style.

Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd), do KoRn's take on it and it turns into a heavy aggressive metal piece of awesomeness.

That Smell (Skynrd), 3 Doors Down turned this intoo an uptempo hard rock song where the guitar work really shines.

Gimme Shelter (Stones) Again this song becomes more hard rocking when covered by Grand Funk Railroad.

And I've always wanted to do Come as You are and give it a raggae caribbean vibe

So the idea would be to do a song that you could put a spin on that would accent your own bands personality and identity.

Since your original post was probably answered I'm just gonna put my dream set list. It'd cater to a fairly diverse audience...

Pressure-Skindred
Every Mother's Son-Lynyrd Skynyrd
Alive- Pearl Jam
Jealous Again/Sting Me- Black Crowes
Ain't Comin Home-Silvertide
Jambi- Tool
Awake-Godsmack
Sidewinder- Avenged Sevenfold
Rollin On-Black Stone Cherry
Real World-Matchbox 20
Blue on Black-Kenny Wayne Shephard
On the Hunt- Lynyrd Skynyrd
Green River- CCR
Devil's Queen- Black Stone Cherry
Charlie- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Parabola-Tool
Runaway- 3 Doors Down
Higher Ground- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Fade to Black- Metallica

Whatta You all think? That'd get em entertained. I think those songs could be pulled off by most decent bands.

Okay maybe not sidewinder and fade to black but the rest of the set isn't too hard. :)
