No offence Bob mate ok?
I was asking a question and to qualify posted what I thought on it. I think you said it better than I put it when you said "appear any different than my audience". That was what I was getting at really.

I suppose its what a person/Band wants to do? Perhaps I'm completely wrong, yeah that happens a lot. But Audiences don't always listen, sometimes you become background music. I think image makes up a small percentage of what people remember about you. We have 5, some say 6 senses.

I'm not suggesting you get the audience to lick and smell band members though I'm sure some here would get a kick out of that :D

Again its a quirk. Anything that can make people remember you surely is not a bad thing in a world of Trillions of Musicians?
Anyway that's just my thinking on it.
Keep well Bob looking forward to you pics.

Image doesn't mean squat to me. Music is everything. I don't want to appear any different than my audience. I'm one of them. I just get lucky and play music for them once in a while. (Gig pictures to follow hopefully soon...)[/quote]

Thought I'd throw in my two cents worth here. This is my first post so don't be to hard on me!! I think in order of importance image is second.Of course the music you play is first. When you entertain people you should strive to be top rate, tight and all about entertaining your fans.Yes they become your fans because they ask you back week after week.
If you go to a concert and watch some of the best on stage ,look at what they are doing , how they dress and the image they project. Then say to yourself...that's a good idea,we can do that too! There rakin in the $$$ so use them for ideas to make changes in your group.
I'm not sayin suits and ties here, but I think it is important to be different than most of you 'fans'.There are alot of 'cool' shirts out there that most wouldn't normally wear and it could give your group a new edge on stage. My new band I'm putting together will have to follow one rule.Lets dress like we know what were doin...jeans(genes)are fine but offset it with a cool shirt, not a t shirt,no shirt, wife beater shirt(what a bad neme for a T-shirt).Look good,be professional and your 'fans' will follow...

Another bluesman? Great. I've been playing blues for almost thirty years. We're starting to gig again almost regularly. I'm a bass player/lead singer. Don't know too many like me in the blues. There is an incredible stand-up bass player/lead singer from Missouri in Doghouse Daddies. Haven't seen them advertised in a while in the K.C. area. A lot of the blues bands I see in town get dressed up more than I do. They try to look "tough" or "cool", lots of leather, lots of hats. A lot of times I wear a baseball hat, T-shirt and jeans, and work boots. I'm just one of the people in the crowd, I just happen to play music for them once in a while...

I used to wear a dress shirt /coat and blue-jeans. (radical back in "the day") hell, maybe still is now..
Like KISS said, "you have to look larger than life when you're on stage."
(they were like 7 feet tall on stage),
Elst no one will notice you. You don't want to look like a slob. You don't want to look like your audience, unless you're going for the Springsteen "everyman-blue collar" thing.. which is ok too, and obviously sells.. And then there's Hendrix.. I think you have to do what you feel.
I liked to dress up for the audience, out of respect. I mean they're paying money for a show, right? Might as well give it to 'em. Of course these days a lot of tats can be the same thing I suppose.

I like to pay attention to appearance, I don't want to show up looking liike I just left a neighbor's backyard BBQ. as some have already stated, I want to stand out, draw attention. I wear different outfits, but I look for clothes specifically for stage wear, most are never worn any other time. I have several wigs, baseball caps with wigs in back, crazy hats, sunglasses that look like they would fit on a basketball, anything else I can find for stage props.

I wear a sports jacket and T-shirt a lot, but NEVER with some other band's logo, or football/baseball team logos, or other advertising. I have several large scarves I use as hatbands, rolled up like bandanas, a fringed leather vest, a jester's hat complete with little bells, a couple of "cat in the hat" hats, all kinds of stuff. You never know what I'm going to show up wearing. I even swapped the pickguard on my strat to make it look better, and I keep my guitars clean and wiped down for stage so they always look nice. No dirty, grungy guitars for me...

You can see some of my stage outfits at my photobucket page, http://s240.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/paleopete/ and I hope to have some recent shots there soon. Onstage shots are on the last page, here's a sample.

Image

No way am I going to get onstage looking just like the rest of the audience. I'm there to be a performer, I'm going to look like one and act like one. Go to see my band, you get a show, not someone standing there looking bored...

The only thing more important than image/stage presence is the MUSIC...
