Much better recording Sans. Drums now sound a little muffled like a silencer on a weapon of choice.

Timing on backing Vox still needs work as regards recording but its obvious as regards recording you are getting there.

Lets see if I can answer a few questions.
Who is running the recording? What kind of system?
Me, Zoom H4 direct from PA, monitor mix.
The drums are muffled. What kind of mics? How many mics? 6 mics, all produced / sold by Carvin. Kick, 3 @ Toms / Snare, two overhead condensors. I worked some today on rearranging and ballencing the gain.
How many tracks are recorded at once? Separation with sound baffles?
We were in our live configuration in my shop / studio.
Was a simple practice recording at rehearsal, ie all played live at the same time.
I'd still like to hear you with your LP > tuner > small cranked tube amp with no effects pedals!
You just did. I only use my amp anymore. Nothing else.
However, I play the rhythm guitar on that song. The lead licks & intro is Ray. He only uses Boss pedals into the PA. I'd like to see him go amp'ed. But he is much more focused on improving his vocals, and the harmonys with Tony. And I am cool with that.
The deviation in the volume levels between the guitars is not as pronounced in the live production. Another little bug to work out.

Chippy, Tony has never sang much outside of Church choir. He is still learning the fine art of backing vocals. You should see him cringe at his mistakes when we playback LOL. He has come a long way and is slowly learning the ropes. He has written a song for us as well. He's the "new guy" but he's fully vested as a part of what is NKF

Drums:
Picked up an extra mic stand today, along with a couple of flex necks so I can get the drum mic's off the side mounts and actually facing the drum heads.
Had a short stand I am no longer using in front of my amp.
Placed the snare mic on it below the snare drum with a condensor above the cymbal complex on that side. Hopefully Steve-o will be early for practice tomorrow so we can work together just recording and balancing the drums, then with my guitar and Eric's bass.

We want to be ready to record in studio at least our signature song.
You Guide My Way by the end of this year.
That will put us only about 9 months behind our original schedule.
And in the grand scheme of things, I dont think 9 months is bad at all.
We have been solicited for a gig on October 24 at Durango Canyon, so after this weeks practice we will have to go back into gig rehearsal mode.
We should be able to use the same set list for our upcoming show in November, that would be good.

Starts up like a rusty music box, but coalesces nicely when the drums come in. Metronome, maybe?

You guys still need to work on your vocals, though. That's your weakest point.

Yes and yes Phil, The boys are putting in extra time just the two of them working on the vox. One of the main driving forces behind my trying to improve rehearsal recordings, to give them and me something to work from.
For some reason I always start my rhythm part to that song too slow or too fast and them meld with the band once we get flowing.

If you "sing" the song in your mind before you start playing, your timing will be better when you are the guy starting up the song, cuz you "hear" the natural flow of the lyric & more naturally fall into the correct tempo.

A simple 4-count click from the drummer's sticks sometimes helps a lot, too, & can get you going at the right speed. Dunno how much you've experimented with stuff like this, but it works for us in our band pretty well.

Sometimes, when you start something off at a different speed, it can also give the whole song a fresh sound, & it gets exciting. Whatever speed you're starting it up with is the tempo that the whole song really should played it at, in order to keep from sounding off.

That puts a lil pressure on you when you're the start-up guy, but i'll bet you can handle a lil pressure.

I kinda like songs that dont have an even tempo. It gives songs more emotion. In my acoustic show I stretch and bend stuff to suit me. Its easy by yourself and a little more difficult with other musicians. This cut and paste technology in recording seems to really kill the sould of some music to me.

George, Ive been so busy with everything under the sun that I just saw this.

I listened to both songs, and first I want to say that you guys are light years ahead of a few monthes ago! Seriously, and the cool thing is that you have been able to keep a solid group together doing your own thing, thats what half the people on this site would love to do.

OK Rain, I would really love to take this song and do the guitar treatment on it. The first few lead licks you throw in sound slightly out of tune, really get your ears tuned to this, over time you will. If you realize you are flat on a song, you can always bend up some.

What I would do on guitar is the first verse or so I would do the lead fills in a lower register, kinda down in the open chord position next to the nut of the guitar. As the vocals kinda raise in pitch and intensity I would find a box pattern midways up the neck, and then toward the end try to find the screaming high notes. I think you can find 3 octaves of notes to do what you are doing. I feel kinda of a country flavor to this song. Listen to the Stones Brown Sugar, or Honky Tonk Women and try to figure out the chord structures they use. They are four note chords that pretty much ingnore the lower e string. I think you could play these type of chord shapes over the bottome guitar and they wont contrast with each other. If you learn these chord shapes you can pull the low string note out and the third string note out and make a nice little pedal steelish type sound. Listen to the intro and break in Creedance Fortunate Son as an example, in my mind these types of things could open the song to some different contrast. Then put a little a little solo in there. When your guy is playing the open acoustic chords learn the top 3 string notes of those chords thats another place to add something a little different to the sound.

I love the intro to Had Enough, that disonant sound is kinda like some STP, and the rythym figure just brought back memories of the band UFO, it kinda reminds of songs like To Hot To Handle, maybe listen to a song like to hot to handle and pay attention to the changeup in the middle, to me your songs need a little more breakup of the themes youve got going. This song give your drummer some compliments from me, his fills just fit the song to a t without going over the top. I think Crip or Jimmy could shredd a heck of a solo over this song. As I would love to do one myself. It needs that screaming wah drenched solo treatment, I can hear a Metallica Enter Sandman type solo over the top.

Sorry I didnt check this earlier as I said life has hit me from a lot of angles lately and getting on here hasnt been a priority. Ive been writing a lot and I hope to get some up over the next few weeks. Ive got almost enough sappy goofy love themed acoustic numbers to make a cd. I think Im just going to go over to my friends house and lay them down straight thru just to have some good demos and then maybe come back to a few and build them.

On a side note ole Irwinsul sent me a message and hes either vactioning in Hawaii or moved there, hes been posting pictures from over there the past couple of weeks.

On another side note at last sat nights gig, I had an old highschool friend that came all the way from TX with her husband to see our band. The were from just North West of Dallas, or I guess Fort Worth, cant remember the name. Sadly our singer had the flu and she got to hear a sit in guy, who did a fabulous job, but it made me realize that my band will not be the same without our guy. This guy was Screaming We Aint Yo Mama, and i felt like I was cheating on our singer, so I think we may put the band on hiatus until everyone is ready again. Hell weve done 51 gis over a 2 year period. I start a new club next monday on my solo thing so musically there is no shortage in my life these days.
