OMG! I used to do this one years ago...I can't tell you how many times I've had feminists & other assholes of the feminine persuasion call me any number of things for playing this tune. I haven't the heart to tell them that the 1st version I ever heard of this song was sung by a woman, talking about killing her old man...so instead I usually just tell them "f*ck you very much" right over the mic as they storm out of the bar I'm playing at...then I tell whoever remains about the fact that it was originally done by a woman...lol

It's NEVER a good policy to piss off patrons enough they leave the venue you're playing at. One of the reasons you're there is to make money for the owners (unless you're the owner and you don't care who leaves). that means hold ing the crowd. You're driving all or most of the women out, who's going to dance? Perhaps a few of the guys left over who are light in their loafers? I'm sorry but giving the poeple who are walking out the finger will probably lead to you leaving that venue for good as the door hits you in the ass...

I,ve had my fill of music with negative lyrical content.
Even though I would consider this more satyrical, other than the musicianship, I am not impressed.

Yeah, I was talking to you, bob. I have a tape somewhere called "The Best Of Kansas City," that has about 15 or 20 different artists' versions of the thing. Great song. We do it in TFRB, & it's always a good dance number.

As far as pissing off the patrons, I used to get a real kick out of playing this " 'Lectric Chair" tune, & ppl usually laughed. There were a few times over the years that some woman would get all PO'd about it, & as time went on, & we got more & more involved with being oh so "PC," it got more & more frequent. It was never "all the women," or anything like that at all.

A cpl times they got right in my face & called me all sortsa stuff, so I said "f*ck you very much," but eventually I just quit playing the thing cuz there are so many ppl that have no sense of humor.

I will add, though, that I also got compliments nearly every time I played the thing, from both sexes, & bar owners never got upset when some of the weirdos got their asses on their shoulders.

I guarantee that the very same ppl that found it oh so sick for me to sing it, would have found it perfectly okay for a woman to sing it, a la Bessie Smith, & they woulda laughed just like they did when the Dixie Chicks did "Earl has to die."

I never actively tried to piss anyone off, & it surprized the hell outta me when it happened, but I'm not one to sit there & take a buncha crap from someone like a deer in the headlights.

I also used that FU very much line when I was a restaurant manager, with some real jerky types. It's great, cuz they weren't sure what they heard from me when I used it, cuz I kinda mumbled it...

I don't handle confrontations well...even when I start them up...LOL

The version of Kansas City I do is a two part song. We do somewhat of a jazzier version of the original song. It doesn't stay in the first chord for four measures. It's the blues progression that does one measure in the first chord ( G for example) then one in the second chord ( C ) then back to G for two measures. The original version of Kansas City is a pretty boring song to me, I usually don't do covers like the original version anyway. We play the song in the traditional sense, sing the version that everybody knows (Except our jazzier style), then the instrument solos, then we come back in with a parody of the song I call Jersey City. It's basically a negative version of Kansas City. I start by singing "I'm not going to Jersey City, I'm going to stay away." Then the rest of the song follows the original format except all the vocals are NEGATIVE to the Kansas City version. I've been doing this version for over 20 years, people get a kick out of it. I guess if I ever tour in New Jersey I'll have to omit this song (not likely to happen any time soon). After all I wouldn't want to piss anybody off...

I like the idea of the negative version, too! That way you can do the thing twice in the same night, but it's like a totally different song...LOL

I dunno if I've ever actually HEARD the "original" version, but I sure have heard a lot of them.

Bromberg does some pretty clever stuff lyrically, too, & he's a far better guitarist than these two vids would suggest.

We do a very fast rockin' version of Johnny B. Goode. One night we had done that and somebody hollared out, "Play something slow, now!" Just for a joke, I started out Johnny B. Goode again, but really slow and the drummer and bass player kicked in on it. I started singing it like Bill Murray doing his "lounge lizard" shtick and figured the drummer would stop after the first verse. He didn't! We ended up doing the whole song like that and, after the initial crowd laughter had died away, people were getting out there and dancing to it, including the guy that had hollared for us to do a slow song.
