so I just got thru going thru an entire 1.5' x 1.5' box of dvd backup material... looking for all my fruity loops songs past -to no avail.

seems my most recent backup is from late 2005... and since then I'd created hundreds of new 'shorts'.

I try to backup regularly, but when you've got some 400 gigs between your samples, recordings, emu sample templates, general documents and mp3's... well... it's tuff. I should be doing incremental backup, and even have software for it... but know that it all needs to start with one huge backup that will tie up this comp for weeks.

guess it's time to go out and get a 500 gig removable drive for backup.

anywho... I've vented... what do you do for backup?

Put my pickup truck in reverse! :)

Just to let you know that nothing is perfect, my son, who is very computer savvy and knows how to treat 'em and maintain 'em, has been using a 500 gig external HD for the past couple of years, just had that drive break down on him. He might be able to send it off and let the professionals save what was on there, but it'll cost him about $300 he says.

Won't make you feel any better I know but I lost about 20 years of material on tapes when I moved in here. I had them in a satchel which I left on the porch here when moving in.

I've not seen it since that time.

It's about human error really isn't it :(

The satchel was a nice leather one. I doubt it was for the music :D
Oh well onwards and upwards.

I lost all my masters in a box when I brought home a big dog that had been abused. She crapped in my box of tapes. I think she was a critic...

Send me two!
One to poop on, one to cover it up with.

It's been a long time since I backed up my stuff.

My compu savey friends scoff at me about it often.

I am told the best way is two externals, both exactly the same.
Put one away in like a safe deposit box or fire / water proof safe.
Plus an automatic on line service like Carbonite.

But what with time lost due to my back injury, and being cancled so often by the hospital, I am scapeing up change for lunch this week.

It will have to wait.

nothing is failsafe. if it had been the 70's and I had a reel to reel backup it could've gotten de-magnetized. The sad thing is I'm pretty sure I know what happened - I used to keep all my fruity files on my c drive... instead of my storage drive like all my other data... and I probably decided to format my drive at one point and forgot that I was storing them there... so I probably only have myself to blame!

incidentally, you can find software online tht's free that will allow you to go in and save some of your data (depending), and sometimes if you let it sit for a while, and blow out all the dust, and reconnect it you can get luck and it will spin for a little while longer.

right on chippy. (I guess other's misfortune does take the edge off - hehe)

philby - rolling on the ground laughing!

'for me to poop on' triumph - hehe.

sans... I hear ya. the nice thing about a hardrive backup is a) the ease to restore, b) the speed, and c) it's reliable. still, unless you backup regularly you'll loose a little, and if you do backup reg you risk introducing a virus to the drive...

so IMHO it's best to do an incremental backup.

I wouldn't do it online cause they charge silly money.

Paragon drive backup will do it auto-magically if you leave a dvd in your drive, comp running, and specify a time...

but alas - it requires you to do one 'complete' backup first - and that is where my human error came in.

If you think your stuff is importand then back it up on a External Hard Drive, Burn a copy on a CD and pay the money to have it stored ON LINE.

It not, get some cheese and move on with life and "Back Jack, and do it again"

Lifes a bitch and then their's computers. :x

online backup is real nice... but it's too expensive... and really no better than any incremental dvd backup IMHO... but I appreciate the sentiment.

what's with that cheese remark? did someone tell you I'm a packer fan or something? go pack go! aharon rogers rules!!!

I think you'll find that on line backup is pretty darned safe! Good web hosts keep several copies of all data and these are kept in sync through chron jobs.

Cough! <<< Me. :D

Anywho it is nearly impossible to lose data from an on line service.
Just my COUGH 2 cents. :D

not sure what you mean?
either way: I still love me some Brett, you can't blame him for trying to fight on... but he didn't look good with the jets and he hasn't looked good with the viks even with a higher rated receiver than anyone on the packers.
I've been behind Arod since the begining. I have to say they made the right decision. even if they didn't do that great last year, it wasn't because the qb wasn't producing...

chippy: of course on line backup is safe but it's spendy. and using chron is no advantage... paragon is automagically scheduled to incrementally backup as well.
