I did actaully and we are a very productive band (when im not deployed)
they were all very talented too.
Ive actually gotten quite a bit of request off this site,
but i guess i havent made it clear that i wont do covers (1 per cd is ok so long that its ahidden tract)
and that i wouldnt join a tribute band to keep my hands.

at the time I joined, and was looking, I didn't find anyone. But since I stopped looking, I've gotten 5-10 requests to audition. of those, I'd say one or 2 were actually "fits" (people don't read lol)..

so far, I guess that would be a "no" though.

The original drummer in our current cover band found me via Bandmix. He's since moved on, but if it weren't for Bandmix we would have never met and this band wouldn't exist.

Cool, stick around. The forum is different from the searches. We share, learn, and critique. I have several friends and brothers and sisters here.

Ive played with a few folks from here but havent picked up any actual bandmates.

I think you have to be patient. There may be someone right around the corner from you wanting to do what you want, but it may have been last year when they wanted to do it. Its all about timing.

You cant expect to post on here and get someone the first few days, it may take time.

Good Luck

I still think you are better to network in your area with similiar musicians. If you are a weekend warrior find bands that are doing what you want follow them around cause they ussually have people around them trying to do the same thing. Find a friend band if its covers and learn to play something off their songlist as close to the record as possible. Then ask them to let you sit in if you come see them. They want you there in the audience and if they get to know you they will identify you with thte song and let you sit in and play it. If you dont know a song and arent capable of pulling off improvisation dont play with them. Just play the song you know, tell the band over the mic thanks for letting me sit in, thanks to the audience for listening and thanks to the venue for allowing you to play. Ive gotten lots of invitations to play doing this.

DONT GET UP AND PLAY SOMETHING THAT YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO PLAY. IT ONLY MAKES YOU LOOK BAD. I DONT CARE HOW GOOD YOU THINK YOU ARE. DONT MAKE AN ASS OF YOURSELF.

When someone wants to sit in I ask them what song they know backwards and forwards and can play blindfolded. I recently let a guy plug into an extra amp just to jam. He said he could play on anything. It was a trainwreck, I basically had to go over and turn him off and tell him to get off the stage in the middle of a set. So once agian dont overstay your welcome with a band.

I guess what Im trying to say is get out there with real bands doing what you want to do. Support them by attendance and they may be able to refer you to friends forming bands or may even need you in thier bands.

The internet is just an exposure tool, its not the answer to your prayers. I havent had anyone come and say Im going to make you a star or hire you or anything off the internet. Real People Make Real Music, so keep it real.

I agree with JW123 whole heartidly.
Though I have gotten paying gigs through the internet, and this site.
It was timing, supply / demand thing.
Not "internet magic".
It took me months of near daily searching & messaging, to a very disporportionate amount of audition time. To finalise our roster.
Hang in there, finger and toe nails dug in.

you know what?

I have to change my answer lol.

I first saw a post by Valerie here on BMIX, then went a saw her perform, etc.. and now a year and so later, I'm in her backup band, so yeah, I guess technically I found her on here, although she only ever posted once and left haha.

Listed the location so you'd know the where the scene I'm in is.

I was contacted by a band from here in January 2009. Played with them for 8 months. I also contacted like 25 musicians in my area on this site in like June about starting up a second situation, and scored like 6 or so auditions and try outs. In the last month or so, my drummer and I have been seeking musicians for a new project, and we now have a bassist (scored here), and are auditioning 3 guitarists (also scored here) this weekend.

Guess it's a bit like outstanding sex (and I'm not trying to be an asshole at all in saying this)... the nut you get depends on how much you work it and put into the effort.
