My Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp, which I recently purchased. It has a very twitchy channel one volume control pot. The increase in volume from .50 to .75 of numeral one is dramatic.

Any ideas? Sane only ... please.

How's things in Slidel? Still a decent music scene?
I lived there some years back. Was single and had lots of money from working offshore out of Morgan City, so I dont remember much of it.
But I did live there for a spell.

I've seen this on any number of devices, from guitars to amps to whatever. The onliest remedy I know of is to change the pot...or simply to tolerate it & deal with it

hey partner, sounds to me like biz as usual for a tube amp.

It's one thing if you are hearing some 'scratch'... or if it's literally going from off to ten... but every tube amp I've ever owned could not be played at low volume.

My current crate v18: I have to 'touch' the pot -literally- and barely move it to get it down to a reasonable volume... and it's a 18watt combo... the deluxe is some 50 watts!

I've owned several and played several and every one of them was off at 1 and loud as hell at 2.

maybe I've misunderstood the issue, and if so it could be just as philby said - you need a new pot...
note that it's high voltage, so let the folks who know do it so you don't end up discharging a big cap and ending your life.

Try putting a GE or JAN NOS 5751 in V1. They have a lower output than a 12ax7 and can in a lot of cases make that a more manageable spike.

that is a preamp tube. not a poweramp tube -meaning it's effect on volume would be minimal at best... but as it were, I have nos united's in there now (lower output 12au7s).
