I agree with JW 100% I have sacrificed a lot for the music biz over the years and it has left me high and dry many times, but as I got older I realized there are different levels of making it. In my opinion if you are playing the music you love and playing out as much as you want and making money doing that then you have made it in the music biz. Over the years and thru much personel sacrifice I have put myself in a position to play music the way I want and not worry about the money. As long as I am making between $100.00 and $200.00 a night minimum. :D

Where you been Haley?
I agree with just about everything that everyone has said on here though that might be difficult to understand?

I've never quit a band until I got here and that was finance related frankly, plus I couldn't see it going anywhere.

Is your name GEORGE HARRISON>? etc?

Are you a Beatle?

What is the name of your band again?

What is the name of your album?

What is your name? All I know is JW. Could be EDIT "JOHN WAYNE" for all I know.

And YES, you are a starving artist and only the people in your immediate area know who you are. (without your regular job(s), you aren't going to be "above water")

GET REAL..you are only as good as your last performance.

Delusional people in here really make me laugh.

Most everyone in here is fame and fortune challenged and until I check you out on Jay Leno or the like, SO ARE YOU.

You are in good stead though, as plenty are in the same boat.

Don't confuse putting on "a good show" with "being well-known".
One is what you aspire to with hard work and determination and one just comes along if things work out and you're lucky, regardless of what your work ethic is.

Big fish in little ponds could be said in a fashion to have made it, if that's all they want to be, Cap. If all you want is to work in your region, & you do it, that's okay. If you can make a living in your region, you're doing better than most ppl who hafta travel to achieve that kinda income. In fact, if you're doing it in a small region, I'd say you're pretty damned good not to have gotten old with your audience.

Fame & fortune ain't everything, nor is it what we're all seeking as musicians.

OK Capt I give in you win.

Feel Better?

It would be nice if you would contribute to the topic instead of trying to discredit anyone that does.

Have a Great Labor Day weekend.

Capt, just a daffynition for ya:

Starving Artist - someone who tries to make a living from their art and forsakes all other forms of income so as to concentrate on their art.

If you have a regular job and play music on the side (as 98% of us do) you are not by definition a starving artist, just an amateur.

If you are able to do all that JW I think that is freakin GREAT.
I think that the point of loyalty also has to do with the consequences of trading something of value for something that may not happen. That doesn't mean to be afraid of change, change is good, but the people you overlook may indeed be the most important people around you. Sometimes the answers don't come easy and it is never cut and dry.
Leave it to CHIPPY to to come up with something like this.

Chippy wrote:You had the most wonderful offer from something/one in the entertainment business? Something that could really put food and prosperity on the table for you. your family and provide security. Would you leave?

Or do you consider you band mates to be all that there is for you?

This is an easy question to answer: it depends.

Everything has to have context. Under certain context, my answer would probably not just be "yes", but "Hell yes!". Under a different context, it might be "no".

But this part made me laugh:

Chippy wrote:...and provide security.

Haha... Chippy, you make me laugh dude. Nothing provides security. Doesn't matter who you are, in whatever job you have, nothing is secure.

That is one of the first steps to finding happiness at a job - understanding that nothing is permanent, there is no job security anywhere. So all you can do is your very best and hope it is enough.

But that's a tangential conversation.

Chippy wrote:Really?
I didn't laugh. (not at that anyway). Tell you what. I'll make you a deal. You come down here with me and I'll trade for your life, perhaps?

Yes there is security. Getting to know the people around you is #1. Working life? Wots yours? Ain't tradin unless you spell it out for me. Mine is here.

I don't understand. You'll have to spell it out for me. None of that made any sense to me.

If you're trying to sell me on security, you're gonna fall short. Even people with oodles of money can lose it overnight (the past 18 months or so should be a very good example of that). People who think they have a secure job can lose it overnight to forces outside of their own control.

Security is an illusion. It's an illusion because the only thing we can control it ourselves. But it's okay; if you give up the illusion of security you learn to go with the flow and harness your own ability to adapt to change. And once you are comfortable with that idea, you can do anything. Change can come and try and rock your sense of "security", but you'll just rock back with adaptability.

...& in music, especially with bands, there is no such thing. Just ask Craig, or Crip, or me....or just about anyone in here. Even bands playing & touring with stuff on the top ten list change personnel. Deep Purple changed singers right after they recorded & released "Made In Japan." They still toured with the new guy, but he was no Ian Gilliam!

Nope - nothing is forever...ever...ever...ever...ever...ever...

GOOD!
Then we are the same people in a manner of speaking. What it is, is in fact what it is. Bones make sense to me.

Language problem, sorry and no offence meant.
