I don't think you're being overly critical JW. I posted this thread for the new acoustic piece, not for the solo (that's been up a while).
That solo is not so much mine as it is my brother-in-law's. That's his album. He asked me to come in and play a solo on a song where he had some space. I spent some time putting together a solo that I really liked, and he didn't like it very much. So he had me play a whole bunch of stuff, and then he ended up splicing it together to make the solo he wanted to hear. So that solo is, to me, a real feat of engineering talent. I mean, it sounds seamless to me, and I couldn't tell you how many different takes we did and how many various "pieces" he used to put that together.
But, I put it on my profile because, up to now, it's been the only recording I've had that I could point people to and say, "That's me playing".
When I write solos, to me, emotion *is* the most important thing. It has to feel. My two favorite solo writers on guitar are Neal Schon (Journey) and Doug Ott (Enchant). Doug cites Neal as a huge influence as well, and you can really hear it in his solos. I think I like Doug's solos best out of everyone I've ever listened to.
The acoustic piece is way more "me". And the melodies in there - that's how I like to write stuff.
So, if you get a chance, listen to it, because I respect your opinion.
