you've got to listen all the way thru...

not actually my hometown... but I spent a lot of time in milwaukee and have seen this guy way back when he would play small local bars...
greg koch... ever hear of him... mks me want to quit!
hard to believe he's just a nobody from my 'hometown'.

Technical wizardry yes, soulful guitar playing no. When you can combine the two then you've got something special. This makes for a good guitar lesson I guess...

admittedly - I've never heard koch play anything that I would call 'soulful' music... he's just not that kind of player...
but in this genre (fast bluegrass) who would you say is soulful?

IOW, I don't think it's a genre that lends itself to 'soulful' very well...

when I think soul I think of steve vai's 'sisters', SRV's 'little wing', jeff beck 'cause we've ended as lovers', john scofield 'a go go', slash's 'november rain' solo, bb kings 'sweet sixteen' all these songs have one thing in common: slow tempo.

I'm curious who you'd put on this list...

Dont quit Mike. He is agreat player and an excellant performer. I like him because he has good sense of humor.
He is very good at shifting and two string playing, I've said it before, but practicing these two things opens up the fretboard, and I have never seen a great player that was not fluent at this. The fingers will only go certain ways, and thats where shifting comes in.

I guess you're right on the genre part. Soul is not really applicable here, I stand corrected...

gonghead: I can picture every note in any key from 0 - 24 at the drop of the hat, but still can't play like greg... and I think the reason is evident when you hear all those dif solos he nails 'note for note'. I just don't have that kind of ambition!
that said... knowing your fretboard is a good thing.

bob - you are someone I respect deeply and your response is one of many reasons why.
I would still like to hear your list of soulful players... cause I'm certain I could come away with a new influence there. if not: that's ok too.

Well Mike stop worrying about nailing it note for note, play it your way, play it from the heart. I can't say it any clearer,I was just trying to give you some tools, things that many guitar methods don't speak enough of.

that's a good point gonghead... I always feel like I've failed if I haven't nailed it exactly like the original... but there's no shame in hearing it 'your way'. rock on.

Thanks Glen.
Not that proficient a player for sure, if I were, I would not "fight the frets" as my bassest likes to call it. It is really hard to take that sound out of my head and send it to my fingers without messin it up.
But yea, that style would not fit in our band, though I do respect his dexterity.

I assume you mean soulful guitarists. Freddy King, Sammy Lawhorn, B.B. King, some of Clapton's material applies, Johnny Copeland, some of Roy Buchanan's material applies, some of Stevie Ray Vaughan, some Mark Knopfler, Buddy Guy, probably my two favorite soulful guitarists are Freddy King and Sammy Lawhorn.

am I the only guy on earth that doesn't think clapton is all that? I agree with 80% of the guys you listed bob, will listen for the other 19%, but want clapton out! (jk - he's good, just not for me).

In the bluegrass genre, Tony Rice is the 1st that comes to mind, cuz he's proficient, quick, yet also very tasty.

I agree with you on Clapton. Never got the bug on him. Yeah, he's okay, about like all the other generic ppl out there that get no recognition, imho.
