Tune it with yo tuner just like you would a six string guitar, except at the twelth fret not open strings. Bingo ! E,A,D,G,B
The fat string (5th) is E, coincedes with the six string, Low E

Normally the "extra" (top or thickest) string on a 5 string bass is tuned to B - B,E,A,D,G

Jimmy was correct about the usual tuning.
Apparently the 5th can also be tuned at E as I stated.
I am going to have to talk with Eric and see what tuning he utilises.

I had always thought the extra stings were to allow the bassest to play into the higher range.

Thanks for bringing this up Chippy, will add to my edification.

Every 5 string I used was G, D, A, E, & low B on the 5th string, which means the 5th fret of the 5th string is an E.

On the 5 string bass, the lowest string (lowest in register and thickest) is tuned to a B.

so your set will be = B, E. A, D, G

I love that low B string on the bass . It makes it a lot easier to play with alternately tuned guitars in D. And a lot of new country stuff really uses a lot off the B. I cant hardly play my 4 string after playing my 5 string a while. I feel like Im missing something. Ive been playing my guitars a lot more lately and Im considering trying a 7 string guitar also . Anyone else playing one ?

Its another day in Paradise !!!
