Don't you guys see it yet? Ted Kennedy was just the spear head for Great Socio-Economic EQAULIZATION. Our govt hates wealthy people ,Ross Perot,Bill Gates,Buffet, etc,etc. These are people they can't control,unless they break the law.
The key word here is control.Thats what "good" govt is supposed to do,,,CONTROL.
The easiest way to control people is to make certain they never reach financial stability,and keep distracting them with minor issues and making certain that they have enough to stay happy.
Obamas , latest distraction is to moms, go get a degree, and get back out to work,,,,,,,WE NEED MORE TAX MONEY. Cool,Take mommy away from baby and tell her to get a real job. More govt control [childcare] By the way moms do the most important job around.No THANX Mr President.

I've never been a fan of Ted Kennedy. The only reason he was anywhere in politics was money, LOTS of money. The only reason he escaped significant jail time was money, LOTS of money. The only reason he was elected to the senate over and over was money, LOTS of money. I have no emotions over his passing. His lack of character is the most important factor in my not caring for him one way or another. It's a shame and a sham that we have lifetime politicians who have zero moral integrity. It speaks volumes about our "civilization" when a slimeball can get continually elected to one of the highest political offices in our country. Shame and a sham...

And NO I don't have the answers. Surfing many different forums has made it clear that many people are starting to get fed up with distractions and lies.
The media has to be carefull of what they report. People working 2 and 3 jobs and they still can't put food on the table.
People voted for a BIG change and it is still the same old game of lies and distraction.
While our govt panders and postures about health care for 50 million uncovered Americans, @8% of the population[covered under existing laws anyway] They neglect the energy problems we face, NO DRILLING ,NO NUCLEAR PLANTS, NO COAL PLANTS, And in my area many towns are against GREEN TECH [windmills]
INSTEAD LETS SIGN CAP AND TRADE AGREEMENTS, that amount to nothing more than another tax on the American people.
This is the govt that seeks ABSOLUTE CONTROL OVER it's citizens .
If only they could find a way around that pesky 2nd amendment.

He would not nave been re-elected so many times if his constituents didn't believe he was doing the job they expected of him. Yeah, he was human, with all of the human frailties we all have. I wonder how many of us would have done as well if we had his family's ill-gotten monies, or if we'd even have bothered to run for public office to help those who rule. He gave back what he had in him to give, & that's all we can ask of anyone. As I said before, I'm no huge fan, but I can't help but respect a guy who does what he did, when he could have just gone off on an endless toot with his money & said flook you all ya poor bastids.

As far as the abortion issue is concerned...that's a very tough subject to tackle in this country, but remember that it has been practiced in nearly every aboriginal culture, using native plants instead of surgery to get the desired result. I am not against it, but I can't really say that I'm for it, either, when I look at my son & grandson. I will never make other ppl's personal decisions for them in this area, though. I cannot live their lives. In some cases, I trulty believe that it isn't a sin, nor a crime. But then again, there are some cases where retroactive birth control is definitely called for, imho.

A lot of power and prestige and self importance comes from being in a powerful seat in the Senate. It doesn't necessarily mean he was motivated by giving anything back. Not to mention, that indirectly, passing the right legislation can make you even more wealthy, if you have side companies or investments that can benefit.

And as to him being re-elected. Citizens often re-elect long time members of Congress, because their longevity serving, has earned them powerful SEATS on the right committees, which puts them in a position to get more PORK for their states. In a way, yes, that is serving the state, but often at the expense of the country as a whole.

The honorable parts to his service, were enacting things like Civil Rights Legislations, and Minimum Wage laws possibly, and Cancer Research funding, etc... And also the fact, that CONSERVATIVE members of Congress respected him, and believed in his word, there is not alot to argue about there. They served with him. They knew what kind of statesman he was or not. Better than any of us here.

I just think his service to his constituents for many decades is worthy of some respect, and the fact that he has now passed on, is worthy of addressing the good in him, more than the bad.

We would want that for ourselves. And so we should extend it to others.

I'm not canonizing the bloke, Craig. It matters not what his reasons for his public service, to me. The fact remains that he SERVED, while so many others of us do naught but criticize, myself included. Yeah, he got perks, & fame, & power, but he also did the best he could in his position. He DID give back. He DID work hard, & do as well as he thought he could, given the parameters of his office.

And if his opposition had convinced his constituents of his lack of good service, he'd have been ousted like so many others have. Thus they got pretty much what they wanted from him, as a rule.

He wasn't the big bad evil that the far right would have us believe him to be.

I will admit that I thought a lot of his decisions were simply wrong, but I doubt he ever did anything out of pure malice toward this country, & he deserves better than this thread's title.

How many decades did Ted Kennedy serve? How many significant pieces of legislation did he author or co-author? If he and the other long serving leaders in the U.S. government were such "great" men why are we in the huge mess we're in today? The "leaders" in Washington have been morally bankrupt and inept in the extreme for decades, with Ted Kennedy at the forefront. Again, it was only money that kept him at the forefront. I've never been impressed one iota with Ted Kennedy...

I am shocked at some of the responses on this thread. I have always thought that musicians as a group had more sensitivity and empathy. Thanks Craig and Phil for keeping the discussion balanced and fair. I would hate to think that people from the south are all right-wing, ultra-conservative religious zealots and hypocrites. You cannot show me one piece of legislation he authored or signed that I cannot show you where it has damaged our country. Been blatently unconstitutional, and created greater harm then good.
Even the Civil rights legeslation have led to forced descrimination via the quota system where color or gender mattered more than education and qualification, civil, constitutional, and legal abuse by the ACLU.
The muchly decried failure of our public schools, beginning with the removal of GOD and The Pledge of Alegance, total lack of ability to dicipline in our school systems also are all related to this one piece of legeslation in a shitstorm of socalism.
The failure of social security, medicare, abuse of the first and second amendments. Continued attempts by him to rewrite or amend our constitution to give more power to the federal government and less to the people who pay their wages. Amnesty for illegal aliens. The congressional Banking scandal. Unions interfering with legal election process, Federal take over of GM, Finacial institution takeovers. He voted to go to war in Iraq, then just like in Vietnam for political points began calling our brave men and women in the service murderers. ( HE SENT THEM THERE )
I could go on for months about his abuse of power.
He was continually re elected by being richer than his opponents and "celebrity status" in the stary eyes of sheep being lead to slaughter.
I am glad he is gone and hope all whom fit his mold follow soon.

I know you and I have had serious disagreements, but as I said many times here, above all else, I care about finding and supporting the truth, to the extent it is possible for me to know it, and I care a great deal about BALANCE. Extremism, no matter which side it is on, is almost always WRONG.

I understand your reasoning and your anger, but you will have to blame people like Ronald Reagan and most other conservative polticians out there as co-conspirators, because almost all of them, had a good working relationship with this man, and came to respect him, in spite of being political opposites. Is it not possible to understand that someone did believe in a different way of bringing about improvements for the country (whether he was right or wrong about those changes being best) and respect that such a person worked toward those ideals, and was unfailing in his support of them? In other words, someone could be wrong about an issue, but can't we admire the fact that they served, and fought hard for those ideals for so many years, and did it in a statesman like fashion? Have you never had a fist-fight with someone you opposed, only to become friends afterward, because you mutually respected, that the other had laid it on the line, and didn't back down?


THE SOUTH:

The South has much to be ashamed of, and much to be proud of. One thing I can expect from the South, is good old common sense. In a place where people are raised to work hard, and work for what they want, without depending on government handouts, it is going to be a hard-sell that we can save ourselves from financial ruin, by increasing DEBT to unprecedented levels.

A family here, has no confusion, that if they were struggling financially, and were already in debt up to their ears, that multiplying that debt many times over, is not going to solve their problems, but instead make them far worse. They would accept and believe that financial DISCIPLINE is required in such a situation, not financial irresponsibility. They have a healthy distrust of government, just like our founding fathers did, and believe in pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps. These are the values that made our country great in the first place.

For all the South's "supposed" ignorance, it is THEY which seem to understand that signing major legislation WITHOUT giving anyone time to even READ, let alone DEBATE the merits of those bills, is OFFENSIVE, and IRRESPONSIBLE. It is THEY which find major fault, in a President who takes 6 MONTHS of investigation to select the family pet, but wants to change 1/6 of the nation's economy (Healthcare) in little more than 3 WEEKS. They don't believe a family pet is a more important decision to consider, than something that affects the ENTIRE NATION.

It is THEY who take offense at trashing our military, when they understand that someone has the freedom to do that in the first place, BECAUSE of the sacrifices military men and women have made throughout our nation's history. Lose the values, sense of duty and sacrifice, faith, common sense and work ethic of southerners, and I assure you, the country will perish before your eyes.

And, if someone can appreciate nothing more about the South, don't ever forget, this: It is THE SOUTH that invented Rock & Roll!!!
