The Late Great ezFolk

Hey Folks,

I received this note from Amazon on June 26th:

We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to notify you that your Associates account has been closed as of June 26, 2009. This is a direct result of the unconstitutional tax collection scheme expected to be passed any day now by the North Carolina state legislature (the General Assembly) and signed by the governor. As a result, we will no longer pay any referral fees for customers referred to Amazon.com or Endless.com after June 26. We were forced to take this unfortunate action in anticipation of actual enactment because of uncertainties surrounding the legislation’s effective date.

... and I received this note from Musician's Friend on June 30th:

Due to the imminent change in law, we have discontinued Musician's Friend's affiliate program with affiliates located in Hawaii, North Carolina and Rhode Island EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. While we have the contractual ability to terminate Programs and Offers at any time, we are giving you the benefit of doubled commissions for the sales in the month of June 2009 in lieu of the typical notice period. This would mean that any July sales would not be commissionable sales. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your business over the years. If you have further questions or concerns, please contact our Musician's Friend CJ team members for details at [email protected].

Those two companies have provided about 75% of the income generated that keep ezFolk going. The only thing left is Google Adsense, and the income from that won't nearly cover the monthly expenses.

Things aren't looking good for the future of ezFolk right now, so if you have files (MP3 or whatever) that aren't backed up elsewhere you should probably do that as well as find an alternative place for your music. Feel free to post info on alternative sites in the ezFolk forums while we're still here.

It's sad, but we've got to be realistic. I just wanted to give everybody the heads up on it instead of just turning out the lights and having everybody wondering what happened. We'll be closing shop sometime soon (before the end of July) so you really shouldn't spend any more time and effort uploading songs or working on your page. I apologize to all of you who have put a lot of time and effort making ezFolk such a good place while it lasted, and I hope we're all still friends and years from now can look back with nothing but good memories.

Our representatives couldn't run a car over a hill, much less run a country. This is what you get when you vote in professional politician's rather than business literate people. Just keep putting the used car salesman, TV evangelist types in office and this is what you get!

sorry to hear it Richard!

I've never seen so many nails used to secure a coffin in my life... you would think they are worried about zombies.

All in all its very sad but just as with all things there will be other things that grow in its place. I know that sounds tree hugger-ish but I've found it to be true.

Music is LIVE or at least that's what people enjoy about it most, sharing it. So perhaps something like this will encourage more live playing opportunities?

Hey you never know, you know.

someone recently said, and maybe it was here, that people LISTEN to music, but go to SEE a band.

Dunno why I thought it relevant, but that's all I got.

an update on the sitch; looks pretty reasonable eh!
I'll be happy if he can keep his ship afloat because it's a pretty sweet site.

Hi Folks,

Many of you are aware that the ezFolk site lost about 75% of its income at the end of June when a new North Carolina state law prompted Musician's Friend and Amazon to end their affiliation with all websites based in North Carolina, one of which was ezFolk.

I've always wanted to keep ezFolk free for everyone to use, but with this loss of revenue it's just not possible to do. Beginning today (07/10/09) there is a new artist subscription option called "Featured Artist." A Featured Artist is basically the same as what has been referred to as an "Artist" in the past, with all features available including unlimited uploading of MP3s and videos.

The ezFolk site will still be free to join for artists and members and anyone can keep a free account as long as they would like, but beginning today the "Artist" account has fewer features than the "Featured Artist" account. With a free "Artist" account, artists will be limited to 5 songs and 5 videos instead of unlimited uploads. Also, only the "Featured Artists" will be listed in the charts, spotlights, and search results. Everything else remains the same.

If you have more than 5 songs in your "Artist" account, the additional songs will not be deleted but only your first 5 songs will show up on your artist page. Also, no additional uploads will be allowed if you are over the 5 song limit as a free artist. If you decide to subscribe as a Featured Artist then all of your songs will be available on your page and will be included in the charts, spotlights, and search results.

The cost for becoming a featured artist is very reasonable and is as follows:

1 Month --- $5
6 Months -- $25 (includes 1 month free)
1 Year ---- $45 (includes 3 months free)

Even if you're paying the highest rate at one month for $5.00, that's still less than 17 cents a day, and if you pay for a year in advance the cost is just a little over 12 cents a day.

To become a Featured Artist, choose "Extra" from the menu in your ezFolk control panel, then select "Subscriptions" and choose the terms you would like and you will automatically become a Featured Artist after paying through PayPal.

By becoming a Featured Artist you will be helping in the promotion of your own music as well as helping the ezFolk website stay alive. Thanks for your support!

That sounds reasonable. Can you "sell" your downloads from this site, or is it just "exposure" ?
Humm I will have to look into this when I have more time.

Hayden . Sorry to tell you this but you have had your head in a hole too long.

IT is now UN AMERCAN to make money. To aquire money from hard work and talent is just plain wrong.

Only politicians and judges are supposed to be allowed this privelidge.

One small Inet /music company is not as important as our move to a socialist state.

If you make any money not controlled by the GOVT, shame on you.
If you make a bunch of money not controlled by the GOVT, you go to jail,or we will just hold you up to public ridicule.

Welcome to the NEW AMERICA, please don't prosper, thats the GOVTS job.

To avoid any misinterpretations here,,, yes I am being totally facetious, and I think you are a good player and person. glen

oh gosh, I thought prospering was only for corporate executives and the politicians they bought?

All else is moot, stupid in-fighting. They pit the poor against each other using racism, abortion, religion, and even corruption, and ESPECIALLY political affiliation. If you are suggesting that Socialism, healthcare, fetuses, or gun rights have ANYTHING to do with the problems in the country, you have been drinking the cool-aid too long.

It's never been about republican vs. democrat, it's always been about rich pitting poor against poor.

AIG walked away with all our money, refused to even say what they did with it, gave themselves FAT bonuses.

The military industrial complex has made TRILLIONS off constant war over the last 30 years, and most of it was made in the last 8. Let's face it, we've killed more civilians than we've liberated, if you can even call it that.

We're encouraged to take prozac, and hundreds of other 'pacifying' drugs to cure our "depression" and other "anxiety disorders"

People need to start using their common sense and realizing that we are ALL americans, and the traitorous politicians, news-stations and talking heads, judges, police, and most of federal government are corrupt to the bone and sold us out long ago.

Wake up already.

Well said, HJ.

I'm still waiting for my bailout. I can mismanage money as well or better than any corporate CEO. Just ask my wife.
