This argument has been going on since the 70s, and it's just foolish.

I am getting really tired of people complaining about MIDI (or any computer/synth generated music).... They claim is not music.

WHY NOT?


Is it because it is not a natural instrument played by a human?
If so, what the hell is an electric guitar?

I've had my share of walks in the woods I have never come across pickups or metal strings growing around.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface that is used to control a device that makes sounds to produce music is something I have done for over 30 years. I could post a few songs here that are "MIDI Music" and not one person here would be able to tell. MIDI music took some hits a long time ago because the "SOUNDS" were so cheap (as in cherp cherp). A Master MIDI Composer can create some of the most beautiful music ever heard. Create being the key word here.

To create a song using MIDI is a beautiful thing. To watch a synthesizer play it back on a stage is ........boring.

Exactly (Sans) and what I've been saying all along. I'm not a musician of any sort.

I slightly disagree with you RGM in that someone playing the Synth on stage is a different kettle of fish and no different from someone pressing a button on a Hammond to use a different sound.

I don't think this is about Midi at all. It's about guitarists. Why the heck I'm getting involved in this too is beyond my comprehension. I play the gitbox too, some, many other things. (Haven't got them it would cost a bloody fortune!)

Be nice is someone like an old Blues Player stepped up the base plate and tell everyone he uses nothing but his strings. (Many can too).

It's an argument no one will ever win but a good post none the less because I was getting bored!

Right off to get my head down for a bit on some songs a band sent me. Casio will not bring out what I can do. I just thought I should say that, it's relative thinking.

Chippy, it was a tongue and cheek. If I walk on stage and push the play button on a keyboard and walk off does that make me a KEY J.

Midi is just an interface. There's no such thing as 'midi music".

What there is: sounds created with some really poor samples.

It doesn't matter if you, or a computer program, are triggering the samples through midi. The end result is that someone hears the sample. They don't "hear" the midi. They can't. No one can hear an electron.

I've heard this argument b4 and it's usually argued by folks with a limited understanding of the subject.

midi stands for musical instrument digital interface. It was initially developed to allow keyboard players to play more than one keyboard at once.

later on midi recording became pragmatic because of the space limitations on computers - as midi recordings only retain the note #, duration and velocity (for the most part) and require many less zeros and ones to store.

now, midi is not music? what's to distinguish it from audio? they are both ones and zeros when stored on a computer.

how is using a sample of music any different than you learning one of hendrix's riffs and then playing it in a different context? loaded question: there isn't a difference.

nowadays keyboards often feature some 'sounds' that are more than just one note: but a pattern that plays back when you hit one key... this is no different than sampling.

the who used arpegiation on some of their best work... and many don't realize that a keybaord player didn't hit every one of those notes... they were arpegiated via midi.

Bethoven didn't play all the notes he wrote... how is that any different?

Someone who "programs" MIDI without using an instrument, is not a musician. He is a composer. A musician is someone who plays a musical instrument. Same with people who use looping to create their music. You are composing, but you are not playing a musical instrument.

Someone whom plays an instrument and stores that on a loop so that he can play a second and third instrumet looped on top of it and then sing too is not only a musician but an artist AKA Neanderpaul.
Our drummer is plug n play, hell we dont even have to give him a plug, he is always ready to play.
