Yeah, you know what I'm talkin' bout

Mary,
Do you recall that old Cosby story where he goes into the candy store and sez "I'll have a quarter of a pound of Negro children please...."

:

No I don't remember that but I did laugh when I read this. I was trying to figure out when that joke was tolds. We were Negroes before we wuz colored, right? Or were we Colored and Negroes at the same time? and I think that we wuz Black in the 70s. Bill Cosby has been reemed by many blacks for not being black enough. Wait, didn't the colored girls sing in the 70s. I'm sooo confused. When Matt and I first married, he tried to be all Mr. civil rights and things. He would get mad whenever anyone called his step-son boy. What he didn't understand was at the age of 4, he pretty much was a ...boy.

I googled Jews harp and the first thing that popped up is an extensive wikipedia article. The term Jews harp is obviously well established, although mention is made of an aversion to the term by some people.
I suspect that this resistance to the term is probably perpetrated by people with some overblown fear of insulting somebody rather then individuals of the Jewish faith.
As I mentioned before, The Jewish music store owner that I purchased my Jews harp from in the 60's referred to the instrument as a Jews harp.

I'd like to hear a few opinions of actual Jewish people as to whether they find the term offensive.

Pertaining to Amos and Andy, I, like Fisherman Bob, enjoyed that show immensely as a boy, and never considered it degrading to anyone at that time.

However..

After watching a few selections of the Amos and Andy TV show on You-Tube, I can now see were those late 40's-early50's stereotypical depictions of blacks could be deemed offensive to people who actually lived through those days of rampant discrimination. I still believe those actors were first rate comedians and its' probable that, like their musical counterparts of that era, were not compensated in accordance to their talents due to their race.

It appears that Dajax conjured up a real can of worms when he created this thread! (but I find the subject most interesting :) )

In my humble opinion, looks like a Jews harp is called a Jews harp!

I love the Jews Harp. I've even played one. Hurt my teeth, but the boing-boing-bearw-bweaa is one of the coolest instruments made imho even though it's mono-key. It'd be cool if they made one with 3 reeds(?) or spring thingys for 3 different keys or maybe even chords. That might blow somebody's mouth up tho..

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

You know what, with Amos and Andy, they did not talk like that in reality. They spoke perfect English. There would have never been an Amos and Andy if they had spoken their regular dialect. However, there would have never had been a Beveerly Hillybillies if they had not spoken with their dialect.

I went to that site to see if there were any Jewish members. It said that it takes at least 2 weeks to send a reply. If I get one worth posting, I am going to dig this up. But who knows, it might still be a busy topic here.

I asked one of my Jewish coworkers about this, but he would not stop twanging that damn thing long enough to give me an answer.

I think somebody tried making an electric Jew's Harp a while back but they couldn't get it to stop shocking the user....

Mary,
But consider that the organization is called "The Jews Harp Guild", and not "The Instrument With A Thousand Names Guild". :D

P.S. Your memory serves you right in recalling my reference to Osibisa sometime back.
It may have been in reference to Wendell Richardson as being one of the great unsung Guitar players of the late 60's. That band definitely expanded my musical horizons,
