If I play it with any of the 40-50 most common chords - it sounds wrong.

Best guitarists I have ever played with absolutely SUCK when it comes to simplistic music, when they try to use the odd chords & strange voicings. You gotta feel the simple as well as the complex in music, imho.

Dim, aug, flat 5th's, & 9th's have no place in traditional bluegrass! You just can't teach that to some ppl, esp when they're oh so educated. LOL

I can't tell you how often I've run into this, & it never fails to amaze me...

I ain't saying that would happen with you RM, I'm just saying it happens a lot with other, otherwise great, muso's. (I made that very mistake, myself, for awhile, until I heard some recordings of what was actually happening. It was awful. I don't do that anymore.)

Just because something is musically sound, it doesn't mean that it will sound right.

Slow songs are really hard to play. However give a slow song git box player a punk vibe and he'd be lost for the most part until he knows better.

I've played with bluegrass folks at tractor meets.
I've found that straight chords mixed with 7ths seem to fit the bill, pretty much, eh?
.
All the chords in the world won't help a musician who doesn't know when (or when not) to use them.
But - when you have a specific sound in your head - all those chords sure do come in handy . . .
.
I guess it all boils down to experience . . .
. . . just keep learning new things, and we'll improve.
.
A lot of people spend their practice time just playing the same stuff over and over.
About 1/3 of my practices are refreshers of old material.
And the other 2/3 of practices are invested on trying to do things that I can not yet do.
. . . emphisis on 'yet.'
I cannot yet play about 1/4 of my newest songs.
But I will NOT simplify them.
That sure is incentive to improve, huh?
Nothing ventured - nothing gained. If we want to get better - we have to push ourselves pretty hard; play less, and practice more.
.
And you guys?
What percentage of your practice time is spent on trying to do something that you can't yet do?
What percentage of your practice time is spent on trying sounds that are completely brand new to you?

I am always practicng things that I cannot yet play. Afterall, I will never improve if I practice only the pieces that I can play. The more I sit here writing on how I practice, the more I realize I need to be practicing, right now.

I guess I'm an oddball; the only time I hear music in my head is when a song comes to me. It comes whole with all the instrument's and vocal's. I always have to hurry to get it down as it is never the same if I miss any of it.
Other than those times I am pretty much blank of music in my head. When I do hear mine, I get the guitar and start doing em.
