A glass of wine at night is s'posed to help stabilize insulin levels...that is if you drink the dry wine. I have a glass of merlot every night at dinner. However, most people who remove sugars and carbs from their diets have a harder time handling their alcohol. That has been my experience.

I also add coconut products to my diet. Coconut oil, MCT oil, ccconut butter and coconut milk are staples. Also, an avocado has way more potassium than a banana and is one of the most nutritious fruits on the planet. I eat at least 3 avocados a week. No, I am not diabetic but that is not by accident. I guarantee you that I was on the road leading to diabetes. I had numerous classic symptoms showing that I was headed in that direction. I have 2 siblings and a mom who have developed full blown diabetes. My mom is on dialysis after being diabetic for nearly 30 years. I 100% believe that with the right diet...one that addresses stabilizing insulin and stimulating glucagon is the ideal way to go. Like insulin, glucogon is produced by the pancreas and together glucagon and insulin work together to keep glucose in perfect balance. Here is the clincher, the pancreas does not produce glucagon if insulin is not stable. In order to stabilize insulin levels you need to consume a diet that supports this. I am pretty strict with my diet but I really enjoy it. I love eating meat and vegetables. That sounds like I eat a lot of vegetables but I only eat about 1-3 servings a day. I add coocnut oil and real cream to my coffee. I use real butter. The pay off has been better energy levels and a better night's sleep, no more insulin spikes and no more migraines.Plus I eat food that I have always enjoyed but avoided because I was told that it was bad for human consumption  J, you've come to the right place.

When I was at the army hospital the only way to test my sugars were by getting blood out a main line somewhere. My arms were so bruised from people learning to draw a little blood on me, I worried I would lose an arm or something . 30 years later i still hate the lab techs who cant find blood in any place they stick. I remember I went from 160 to 117 Lbs in less than 3 weeks , so my veins were a a lot harder to find and the docs had them taking blood 6-8 times a day at first and 2-3 times a day toward the end of my stay there. I remember the first time I got my sugar tested by having my finger poked and I thought to myself how wonderful the person who designed that was. Oddly enough I would rather poke one of my fretting fingers , I always get a better sample and have some healthy callouses from that as well . I have always had to use insulin and dealing with low sugars has been the scary part for me. Just saturday I got into trouble with my wife cause she could tell My sugar was getting low and I woudnt listen to her, Next thing I know Im sick as hell and wanting to fight . When you get hypo glycemic your lack of sugars to the brain can make you real stupid. By doing my best to keep my sugars around 100 its not hard to let those sugars get so low. I have to say that in 30 years that the meds , testing technics , and advances have come so far along managing diabetes is so much easier. Im confident youll do just fine taking care of yourself and be back to playing as much as your heart desires. All of you older guys need to take notes cause millions of people out there have diabetes and dont even know it yet. If your feeling bad a lot there might be something going on that requires some attention. My gret great grandmother died at a very young age in the twenties and we now know it was from diabtes. Thank God they developed insulin before my grandmother got sick, or I might not be here. She lived with it over 50 years , and it is one of the reasons she died. I was never giving any good pointers or advise from my family. So I kind of feel like I needed to tell of my experiences a little. If you or anybody else wants to talk about this or anything else as far as that goes , give me a shout.

I keep telling myself if I say it enough maybe Ill believe it !

Its another day in Paradise !!!!

JH, I too have been recently diagnoised with Type I. My blood sugar was in the 250's so my Cardiologist recommended I get further blood testing done. I had my aortic heart valve replaced with a human valve back in 98, so I listen to my Cardiologist. He saved my life. My primary doctor put me on Metformin to lower my blood sugar and I've changed my diet considerably. I've had to also start taking Glipizide to lower it further. I test twice a day now and average about 120 in the morning and about 140 at night. I know I could improve my diet further, but I love food! I'm not over weight, in fact I've lost about 10 lbs in the last two months. I know this is something I will be dealing with the rest of my life. I just don't want to end up like my neighbor, a double amputee, because he wasn't following his doctor's advice. That's enough incentive for me. I'm only 48 and don't want to be in a wheelchair. Just do what the Dr's tell you and do your research to learn about the disease. Cut out the alchohol, soda and carbs and you'll see a difference. I sure did. Good luck bro!!

I want to add, and encourage everyone to have their vitamin D levels checked. Here is something that was in my email this morning. Scroll down to close to the bottom of this article and read what diseases vitamin D can address.

Let us be cautious in discussion of non water soluable vitamins my friends.
Too many people will only hear "you need lots of Vitamin D to cure all your ills"

Vitamin D toxisity is real and fatal !!

You take too much C, no biggie you just piss it off.
You take too much D, you will be jamming with Michael and Elvis.

The more information he has on what you are going through will mean HE WILL be able to prescribe the better way forward.

That means you even have to tell him about erectile dysfunction.
I thought I had that one time, but it turns out that the woman was just ugly.
