OH, MUSIC, I like the one I can keep in the right key.

So much fun to be a newbe and a smartass!!

Our Bassest keeps telling me, just forget all that mess and play your guitar.

Dang I hate bassist like that, it makes it seem lke our instrument is a joke and plays the easier version of what the guitar plays.
Thats not even close to true in progressive bands thank God. And Jazz/Blues bassist are great too.
Suspended is something Ive been getting into lately, it adds a feel of "wonder" to my pieces i think.
But diminished remains my fave, along with minor of course.

Holy crap.... I do: Pentatonic, major, minor, chromatic, diminished, augmented, etc... but I don't freakin' dwell on it or even think about it anymore... I use the "tools" given me but I'm not limiting myself to One favorite scale.... Like I said before, when you improvise, close your eyes and "feel" the piece... stop thinking scales.... you will regret it and you are jipping yourselves of fully "letting go"!

i didnt know that music theroy was a hot topic in a musical forum.
Im sorry for being on target now geez.
You can let go all you want but if its not sounding good then no one will care. so "let go" all you want but music theroy does help establish more melodic cores to your songs.

But sorry for bringing this up Cri2Nite

Like I said before.... You're gonna end up sounding like a robot if all you do is scales when you improvise... Dude.... Been playing since 12... I'm 50 now... I think I can throw in a little helpful input..... Are you recording?... are you playing out?... When you gig or record live, do you just play scales?? Or do you play from the heart?? Don't go getting all apeshit on me... I'm just saying from experience...

I dont listen to Satch every day but sometimes I get into that stuff.

Ok, that's a side of Satch I hadn't heard before 8)
I'll revise my last statement: I don't like Satch's solo stuff. He's sounds pretty good in Chickenfoot though. 8)

Chris, Although Im a guitarist and get accused of shredding sometimes BUT Im not really into all that wanking off that some of the guys like Satch Vai Malmsteen McAlpine do, but sometimes I do like to listen for a little bit. I tend to jump around a lot.

Like I said Chickenfoot is cool, go on youtube and you can find them playing Highway Star, Bad Motorscooter and they sound pretty good to me. Maybe Satch should have done more vocal oriented material.

Pat Metheny does alot of shredding, Jimmy Smith did alot of shredding, so whats wrong with that and why should'nt you be allowed to also?
If it sounds good let it roll.

Scales and scale exercises should just be used for personal practicing and just knowing your way around the fretboard.... I know quite a few awesome guitarists that can run rings around me when it comes to scales but they sound like freakin' robots... You gotta feel the piece... close your eyes and go beyond the scale and pentatonic mind-set!

Crip's got a good point.I've noticed such players many times over the years.

I also agree with Mary 57 that all scales and modes are cool.

I can say, however that in my younger days, I was partial to songs in minor keys. I like to use those jazzy four note sixths and sevenths when just noodling around, or wingin' a tune that I really don't know that well.

Then again, I've been known to bang on one note for a few bars when so inspired (or uninspired, as the case may be. )

Howlin'

eh?
no one's dissing shredding. I was dissing Satriani cause I don't like his style as represented in his solo-album. JW just turned me on to Chickenfoot where I got to hear a side of Satriani I hadn't heard before. I'm a big fan of neoclassical shred - just not Satriani's style of it.

I truly love him. He could play circles around me with my own guitar, yet he never disrespects me as a musician. He is always there if I have a question related to theory. But he likes the way I play when I get in the groove and just play by feel. Eric is a Bassest in the true sense of the word because he chooses to play bass, it's what he loves.
You cant buy chemistry like that.
