Even in leads, sometimes less is more. Those short little signature licks in many tunes make them what they are. For me, I try to put in what ever my mind tells me the piece calls for. Yeah, there's lots of material that guitar leads won't fit. Doesn't detract from the value of the song for me.

This could give you a chance to really work on your vocals, your chord voicings, your effects, etc, & really nail things down perfectly. It can also help to give you a new muse for writing new stuff.

Sometimes, when you're looking at something, you're not really seeing what's there, but what you perceive to be missing.

Think it over. Try it out a few times if it's even slightly interesting, & you might be pleasantly surprized...or you might find that it's as dull as you expected...whatever happens, the door swings both ways any time you want it to.

I always find that there's something to be learned in any given situation, & if I immerse myself in it, I get the feel for it, & the attitude that goes along with being a team player. If I cannot immerse myself in it, I don't bother, or I move on.

There really IS more out there than guitar band music...(LOL...teasing ya, JH!)

Paul, PAUL, PAUL!!!

I thought you were on tour still?

I have been DYING to hear what you thought of my new songs!

You're one of the songwriters I respect most here!

(Sorry JH, didn't mean to sidetrack your thread!)

Craig I will be right there to the "thank you" thread. I've been keeping up with it and listening. Let me take one more listen to refresh my thoughts.

Philby wise words indeed. I play leads that fit the song. When I write a song and record it to me the guitar solo is a song within a song. I will literally write the solo for the song. I try to add as much virtuosity into the solo as I can but at the same time trying to play for the song. I try to do the same thing live with cover songs. I am use to playing solo's as close to the original or most popular recording as possible, most times note for note. I am a writer though and I do have my own style. These guy's for the most part play the songs their own way.
I am not just a lead player I am a strong rythm player too so vamping on a chord progression is also a lot of fun for me. This bands set list is so echlectic I only new a few of their songs but because of my rythm ability I was able to run thru all of their songs in the first set and we could have literally been playing live it sounded that good. We were just getting ready to start the 2cd set when my wife called and informed me that the a.c. system at our house was overflowing thru the ceiling. I had to leave and run home and take my compressor and blow out the primary and secondary drain lines before it ruined the ceiling. As I was loading my gear up to leave the audition they were joking with me saying when you went to use the restroom you called your wife and ya'll made up that story just so you could get out of here LOL. I laughed and said I have done that before but you guy's are good musicians so this is not one of those times!

J-HALEY wrote:The audition went real well. This band plays a lot of new music (well it is newer to me LOL). They have a lot of originals also that are pretty good. They asked me out right if I want the gig I told them let me think about it over night and I will let them know tomorrow (today). My delima is I want to show people what I can do. I see greatness here but, this music is a little stiffeling for me. The drummer is real good and so is the singer the bass player is good as well, the lead singer also plays guitar and can play the keyboards well too. I know it is bad manners to join a band and try to change it. The lead singer has a masters degree in music is very talented and is a really good music leader. What I really want to tell them is I will join if they will do some music where I can really solo and shine as a guitarist. Their set list is really unique they do a version of Country Roads that starts out real country and then goes all out Punk. Weird but really cool. They are really close to me. What do you guys think? I need advise. Oh and as I logged in to type this another band has contacted me thru BM and say's I would be a good fit I listened to some of their practice recordings they have posted here under gmiktx. They are a country rock band and sound really good as well. Thanks in advance for your advise.
As what you have said, their line up is complete since the singer can play lead guitar and keys. Wonder why would they need another member.. Are you a rythm guitarist or lead?

Go to my site and listen to the music posted and you tell me. Basically I can play circles around this player and that is what he wants. I am both lead and rythm guitar and vocals lead and harmony.

Craig, Man that is very tempting, however I have a bunch of kids and the wife and I both have really awesome jobs here in H-town. Any chance of you moving to Houston and starting a Badass band here with me.

OMG!!!

Wouldn't that be something?

JH, that would be "eclectic" on crack!

Houston wouldn't know what hit it! :D

We could be switching instruments, and...

IMAGINE THE VOCALS!!! WE ALL SING!!!

That would be a badass band!

Is Phil gonna play bass?

We'd kill each other before the 2nd set. LMAO!

It really would.

CraigMaxim wrote:Is Phil gonna play bass?

You know the only reason I didn't say that is because I was being selfish and wanting to play bass. Shoot, in this band I'd only get to sing leads or backups. :(

CraigMaxim wrote:We'd kill each other before the 2nd set. LMAO!

Just you and I Craig! I bet the rest of that bunch would be easy to work with. No really. I bet there would be so much creativity and reactive creativity we would all be satisfied. Man I wish! Like JHaley I have DEEP roots in the 'noke. And I'm such a Mama's boy I couldn't get along without her. Shoot and a Daddy's boy. My parents are angels. Give give give.
