I've no doubt that this will happen at some point thus making way for further car stops, arrests and fines. Sad thing is that they will be sold on the black market and for a good profit by large gangs just like any other "Substance" and there will be more killings, probes.

Education is key here not persecuting people.

That wasn't why I posted the link.

I actually don't think prohibition will happen. I think the author makes some really compelling arguments in the second half of the article as to why prohibition would be a stupid idea.

What I found interesting was this:

More than 800,000 people are arrested every year for marijuana, the vast majority for possession, yet all the data from studies that compare the two substances show that cigarettes are more harmful to an individual's health.

Education is the key. And as the author said, they're seeing the results in young people even now.

What I got from this article was that maybe prohibition is the wrong answer, and maybe legalization and taxation are the right answer - for more than just cigs...

Yes I think so too Colors. When you marginalize something you provide mysticism and therefore in turn create those who will do it just to see....

I see they are looking at Obese people too now. Rather sounds like 1930's Germany to me.

You can look at it that way, sure.

Or you can look at it like this: an attempt to create a healthier society.

I know when we look at things as individuals we have a tendency to be very self-centered. We feel like our freedoms our being impinged. And that is true. But when you look at things from a wider perspective you see things differently, and realize that the whole is the sum of the parts, and the whole can only change when the individual parts changed.

We'd like a healthier society, but as individuals we don't want to be the ones to change. We hope other people will do it and pick up our slack.

I say that because that's how I feel - I'm technically obese guy. I am 6'0" and 250lbs. I changed my eating habits starting this past week (not dieting - dieting is a temporary solution to a permanent problem).

I've been overweight for more than a decade. I'd like to see us become a healthier society, but I don't feel particularly compelled to fix my own weight problems because of it. Instead, I try and find someone fatter than me and say, "Hey - they're the one who needs to change their habits, not me".

But that's the wrong attitude to have. Because the only person we can control is ourselves.

All good points Colors.
What I don't understand is this. Pardon me too people.
We are over populated now. In 30 years we will have just about cut every tree down in existence where it still exists and more than likely still be breeding like rats.

Where is the fulcrum on this problem alone?

To me it doesn't mean health at all because I've been in some of your hospitals and many of mine. Both are completely different in nature albeit the "Where you are" so....

I don't think this is about health at all.

Consider.

If there were a plan to colonize Mars in the next decade I could completely understand. We are no about to do that nor will we that I can see either.

The entire summation of this is? We are all going to live longer, people will not smoke, will not use substances, will not drink, will not use cell phones in cars, will pay taxes.

The end product: People live longer and get more angry with each due to having no space thus providing that one opportunity that everyone dreads. That mistake in space when someone gets hyper and presses that wonderful RED button.

I chose my Avatar and web site for a reason. We'll all be connected to each other via a series of bottle jars and communicate with telepathy. I think this is where the health service is going. Clean DNA, Clean People, lots of coding to use for new people should we need them in cryogenics.

:D
Tongue in cheek but with a smatter of concern

The only source of "clean" DNA died with the passing of Adam and Eve.
The degredation of the genotypes was a sentenent part of the fall of mankind from grace. Genetic enginering can only ultimatley lead to disaster.
The greatist extinction our planet has ever faced is unavoidable.
The seven deadly sins hold sway on mankind.
Do I hear hoofbeats? Perhaps not today.
