Mother Nature has a way of screwing things up. It rained almost all day at the disc golf tournament. I gathered up all my PA equipment and got to the tournament hotel about 7:15. I thought I was an hour late. People who were involved with the talent competition WERE STILL ON THE DISC GOLF COURSE. They arrived almost at 8:00. The deal was we were supposed to set up on one half of the stage and the talent show on the other half. There was supposed to be two PA systems. By the time they got the other PA working it sounded like crap. I ended up running the sound for the entire show through my PA. My band got to play four songs at the end of the show. There wasn't any jamming except for the usual trombone player (Crazy John Brooks) who practically worships us. Anyway, you can blame the rain for screwing everything up. The talent show was fun to watch. The tuba player played while putting. At the end of his five minutes he took his entire bag of golf discs and threw it at the target. It was hysterical. HE missed about 90% of his putts. I'll ask around if anybody got pictures. There was a LOT of people taking pics so I'm sure I'll find some to post. I've never seen so many tired disc golfers. The courses in Kansas City are hard enough without having to fight the pouring rain....

I'm hoping the rains quit by Fri nite for my outside gig, but, well, I have zero control over that stuff, right? I did manage to find someone to watch Jace when I hafta leave to be on time & stuff...so I feel like I've done my part, since I've rehearsed & all. I'm singing 3 songs, something I wasn't planning on when all of this started, but what the heck.

sounds like Philby is right... sounds like it was a good time. I know it sucks when you don't get the chance at a good cuttin it loose gig though!

My experience is that there is a price to be paid for things worth doing and having. The early going is tough, but when someone sticks it out, it becomes quite successful later, and often lasting.

Maybe this is the start of a new thing for you? Organzing these tournaments and promoting them, and whatever else goes with it.

Your love the sport is contageous, and that's the best kind of person to be promoting something!

The Professional Disc Golf Association organizes the tournament. I'm just a peon at the course, spotting tough holes, making sure there's plenty of water for everybody. Just basicallly the hired help. The talent show was disorganized chaos, I just made it go a little smoother. I had a feeling about five days ago they were in trouble with the sound system. I hedged my bets and volunteered to bring mine and the band. Too bad everything started so late. I bend over backwards for the disc golf community in K.C. People from out of town are raving about the quality of our courses. The first thing they tell me is how clean they are. It may have something to do with me picking up trash every time I'm out there. I'm a fanatic. My volunteer position is course coordinator and I take it seriously. I'll be putting in way more band time over the next months however and probably recruit a younger person to take over as course coordinator. I've done it for twelve years and it's time for someone else to do it. I'm really hoping to put together a CD this next six months and I'm going to need to take more time to do it. People have been asking me when my CD is coming out. We've got the personnel to pull it off (finally) and I think there's a consensus to to do it. It's long overdue.

Yeah it was great fun. The disc golf community is made up of special people. Most everybody is so laid back. It's like a bunch of hippies going to a park and flinging frisbees, maybe just a bit more organized than that. If anybody has any interest in disc golf I suggest finding a disc golf course near you (PDGA course directory), buying a few discs (driver, midrange, & putter) and then go out and play. The vast majority of courses are FREE to play. You can go just about any time and start throwing. If there's people on the first teebox just go to another open hole and throw. There's no other world class sport that is so affordable on planet Earth. Watching the players all week is a special deal to me. They are playing on a course I take care of and helped design. I don't get paid a dime to do it and the satisfaction it brings everybody is priceless. And then the various bands I've been in have performed at about eight different tournaments. It's kind of a neat deal to me. People who have played for years in my league are shocked when they hear me perform. I don't talk very loud and I'm kind of shy and reserved but get me in front of a microphone and surround me with some good musicians and I become an animal. I'm all about having fun. Life is too short not to have fun. People take things too seriously. It's good to be around people who have fun (disc golf, bands where band members get along, fishing). I probably have too much fun but you can't take anything material with you when you die. If I hadn't done all the things I've done then when I'm on my deathbed I wish I would have had more fun. FUN IS THE KEY WORD for me.
