I never could understand how poker is considered a sport. Why on earth is poker on ESPN? It's a GAME. How come there's no SCRABBLE tournaments on ESPN? How about chess tournaments on ESPN? Tiddlywinks? Dominoes? I'd like to see Phil Hellmuth for example try and guard Labron James, or how about Phil dirve in the Daytona 500. Poker is a damn GAME, it doesn't qualify as a sport. And for those who don't play poker (like me) it's the most boring thing ever to watch on television. It doesn't belong on ESPN.
As a poker player, I'd disagree with most of that - except the "sport" part.
I don't consider it a sport. It's a game of skill and chance. But I can't recall ESPN touting as a sport.
The reason it is on ESPN is simple: ratings. It gets 'em.
Boring? This is true of anything you're not interested in, so whats' the point? I find NASCAR to be excruciatingly boring - all those cars going round and round and round... boring. But you know what? It draws ratings because a huge segment of Americans like it. To each their own.
P.S. The reason there are no chess matches or Tiddlywink matches on ESPN - no cash and no ratings.
When people start playing Tiddlywinks for a first place prize of $9 million, I think ESPN will air it.
