First jam session fell into my lap. Actually I kind of created it. We're having the World Dsic Gof Championships in the Kansas City area all next week. I'm taking off the entire week to help run the tournament at Prairie Center Park in Olathe, Kansas where I'm the course coordinator for the Kansas City Flying Disc Club. The KCFDC is hosting the World's. Anyway they are having a talent show next Tuesday evening. It sounded like it was a bit disorganized so I vounteered to have the band set up a jam session before and after the competition. There's going to be people from all over North America, Japan, and Europe, so it could end up being a decent international crowd. Or it could end up being a few local "talented" people. One of my disc golf friends who plays tuba part-time will play a song while putting discs into a disc golf basket. I suggested we try and set up a marching band which performs continuously while playing an entire round of disc golf, maybe contact the Guinness Book of World Records. Anyway it sounds like there might be some fun for us next Tuesday. It's at the Westin Crown Center in downtown Kansas City.

Hey Fisherman. Good luck man, I've followed your story with interest. Hope all goes well.

The tuba player is supposed to be pretty incredible. He plays all over the region in various big bands. He's done a fair amount of studio work as well. I'm really looking forward to jamming with him and vice-versa. One of our disc golf members is Loomis. He's a stand-up comedian who has performed professionally. He recently came back from a tour of Iraq to entertain the troops. There's definitely going to be some talented people at this gig.

Do you still play disc golf (the correct terminology since the frisbee has evolved so much)? I've been working my butt off trying to get the course ready for this next very big week. The last three days hundreds of disc golfers from all over the U.S. and Europe have been scouting my course. We've been fortunate to have just the right kind of weather, not too hot or cold, just the right amount of rain, to get the course in tip top shape. We've got the Innova Disccatcher baskets (bright yellow) and I've been cleaning them off. They've been in the ground about eleven years and I didn't realize how dirty they have become. My hands are sore from scrubbing them with steel wool and degreaser, but they practically look brand new. Olathe Parks & Rec have done an absolute bang up job as well. Prairie Center Park is disc golf heaven. Just the right amount of trees, each hole has a different challenge to it. If you haven't played disc golf in a while you should check out all the new plastic that has been developed in the last ten years. It'll make your head spin. So many different models, so many different kinds of plastic, so many new companies getting into the act. There has to be hundreds of different model discs. Innova comes out with a new model every month at least. You buy a new disc and it's practically obsolete before you can break it in. Kind of parallels the new technology in electronics. You buy a computer or cell phone and it's garbage before you turn it on. I'll be a spotter all week next week, just keeping my eye out for errant throws and telling the thrower where their disc landed. Kind of boring job but necessary to keep the players flowing forward. We've got some pins that are ten feet from out of bounds thick woods and tall grass. Lots of risk and reward. At my course if you throw a disc off course fifteen feet you're SOL. it's a good test for the amateur players who will be competing there. The pros will be playing at the super long courses in town.

It's been years. But I grew up on Frisbee, and played alot of Frisbee golf too. When we were traveling up north in my Mom's band, many years ago, nobody knew what it was. They laughed. LOL - It's grown a hell of alot since then. You can find equipment in lots of places now. I though about introducing my step kids to it.

My mom's drummer, who was like a big brother to me, was also a big frisbee golf finatic. We played frisbee golf together once in a while when we could, but we'd just throw, and be fancy in our throws and catches, at rest areas when we were on the road (6 years straight) to pass the time, stretch our legs.

This guy was a great guy. Fell in love with a girl he met in one of the gigs, and BOOM, left the band that week, and stayed in Tennessee with her. I lost my big brother and playmate. It was sad for me but I wished him the best. When we were on the road, he had a casette collection of probably thousands, for sure many hundreds. And this stuff was all over the place, but he loved classic rock, from ELP to Blue Oyster Cult, to Cream, the Who, Edgar Winter and other stuff too, like Weather Report, Dixie Dregs.

Funny, I had just commented on the Dregs in JH's thread, and that's actually where I learned about the Dregs was from him, and Cruise Control and Cat Food were a few of his favorite Dregs tunes. But what was cool, was that he had BOOTLEGS out the wazoo. He recorded alot of sh*t at concerts he went to, or played at. He played for Dizzy Gilespie once, and was actually a drummer for The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, for a short while. They played Asbury Park, NJ and he had told me a couple of the weird names they had went under:

Thunder Chicken
Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom

Not long ago, I was mentioning about the names of Bruce's former bands online somehwere (maybe here?) and I looked up the names just to be sure, cause though it wasn't his personality to make sh*t up, I thought I had better check to make sure, someone else somewhere had mentioned at least one of these names.

When I did the search, I came up with a comment left on a blog or news story or something. And the comment came from some guy who said something like: "If anyone knows how to get a hold of Bruce, ask him to drop "Billy C." a line. He may remember me, I played with him when he was Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom."

OMG I thought!!! That's my mom's drummer! My buddy Billy!!!

I checked, and sure enough, he had left his email on this message he left for Bruce.

Holy Crap!!!

I sent him and email, and he was thrilled to hear from me again. Gave him my mom's email too!

Turns out he married the girl, and has stayed with her THIS WHOLE TIME!!! More than 25 years now!

Got him signed up on my Facebook now too.

He actually wants me to go up to Tennessee where he is, and start a badass band with him. Says he knows alot of really good musicians, and says his chops are still there. He was a really good drummer. Could sing back up too!

It's amazing how something reminds you of something completely different. I'm glad you thought of your old friend. When I lived in New Jersey I heard some stories about Bruce Springsteen (some good and some bad) as well as Southside Johnny. I knew people who were roadies for them. I won't go into the stories. I'm not one to repeat what might be hearsay.
I wish I had taken up disc golf when I was a young stud (I started playing disc golf in 1997). I'm 51 years old now. My game is wimpy drives, awesome midrange, and average putting. I play the same almost every round. It's funny how some disc golfers develop allegiances to different brands. There's mostly Innova Champion guys, probably because the greatest disc golfer of all time, Ken Climo, is their biggest advocate of Innova. By the way he's from Florida. There's plenty of people who wouldn't be caught dead throwing anything other than Innova. I call it Innova ON The Brain syndrome. I've been using Discraft drivers and midrange for about a year now. I can't throw the ultra long range, super fast drivers so I prefer some of the more understable drivers like Discraft Avenger SS (Super Straight). The thing keeps me in the fairway and sets up my midrange game beautifully. I use Discraft Meteor (Straight) and Discraft Drone (HARD left overstable) for almost all my midrange shots (80-175 feet). I still putt old school with Lightning Discs Upshots (Straight) and Rubber Putters (Understable). Check out Innova Champion and Discraft websites. The current number one player in the world is Nate Doss. He's 100% Discraft. I had the pleasure of playing a glow round in the dark and cold with the number four player in the world Eric McCabe. He's also 100% Discraft. McCabe is a freak of nature. He might be the most accurate disc golfer on the planet. He won the world disc golf putting championship last year. The man is jaw dropping astonishing great. I'm looking for him to have a big World's tournament next week. If you get back into it think stable to understable drivers with better glide. The BIG stuff will frustrate you at first. Later...

Well, I think that sans needs to get a buncha gold & silver frisbee rings made up, with a lil wire setup so you can wear 'em like a halo, with his band logo on 'em.

It's advertising! It's a toy! It's a fashion statement! It's a religious statement! It's a dessert topping! (Um...no...it's not a dessert topping...sorry...got carried away...)

When we played that glow round he was on my scorecard with a different partner. I was embarassed because I didn't know who he was until the sixth hole. It was dark and I didn't recognize him. After the sixth hole I asked my partner who this Eric guy was and he said McCabe. On top of that he was teamed up with one of the best players in Kansas City. They ended up shooting 42 (12 under par) IN THE DARK at about 20 degrees. They beat every other team by nine throws. I mean it was sick. I can't explain how he does what he does. He anhyzers a Predator which is one of the most overstable drivers. I can't really explain it technically here but it defies the laws of physics. It's truly humbling to see somebody who is one of the best in the world at their game. If there's ever a major disc golf event near your location you should check it out. Maybe someday disc golf will be an Olympic sport.

I never tried Disc Golf but I love to golf and throw the frisbee so it sounds like fun. They need to combine poker and tennis and I'm there.

I never could understand how poker is considered a sport. Why on earth is poker on ESPN? It's a GAME. How come there's no SCRABBLE tournaments on ESPN? How about chess tournaments on ESPN? Tiddlywinks? Dominoes? I'd like to see Phil Hellmuth for example try and guard Labron James, or how about Phil dirve in the Daytona 500. Poker is a damn GAME, it doesn't qualify as a sport. And for those who don't play poker (like me) it's the most boring thing ever to watch on television. It doesn't belong on ESPN.
