If you READ the wiki definition, again, you'll see that the term narcotic can be used in different ways.

check it out:

- the use of the word "narcotic" to refer to any illegal or unlawfully possessed drug including marijuana and cocaine is common worldwide

- The decision to term all illegal drugs as narcotics is often used as a shorthand way to politicize and demonize any illegal drug.

It says OFTEN USED, not ALWAYS. The definition of the word also depends on the country. So, by these definitions, I'm not wrong!

Just like the common cigarette one day.

Yes. The common, harmless, cigarette...

Actually, recent studies have shown that pot may actually prevent cancer. Heavy pot smokers, even those who also smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day, have lower incidences of lung cancer than people who smoke nothing at all. This is because THC apparently kills precancerous cells.

This story was on CNN a couple months back.

Didn't say it wasn't harmless. I had what I suspect was Swine Flu last week. It was mild and hung around but didn't quiet knock me off me feet but boy I ached some. I was worried too.

Scary images on TV and people posting them won't make quitting any easier. Someone does that and I feel like I'm being called a prick for having an addiction that I pay taxes on. Neither are funny or fair.

Oh great - you ppl all missed the most important fact of the article - THEY ARE TAXING MEDICINE!

Bastards! How DARE they! I find it completely immoral to tax ANY drug you have a prescription for. If you have a 'scrp', you NEED this stuff.

In WV, they tax clothes, food & gasoline. WRONG! Now these assholes are gonna tax your medicines, too?

This only further proves my points that our fair gov'ts, both fed & local, are overstepping their bounds in ways that need some SERIOUS adjusting!

first off this is not 'evidence', this was a study. There is no scientific evidence mentioned here, no scientific link found... just conjecture based on a seemingly causal relationship.

Regardless of whether this particular claim is ever substantiated... there is a mountain of scientific evidence -that is real proof that smoking pot is terrible for you lungs, hearts, stomach etc.

Ultimately these health risks will lead to deaths which will lead to lawsuits which will lead to an equivalent to the $7 pack of cigarettes. (isn't that what they are up to? it's a good model)

You're right Chippy - you didn't say it was harmless. But that was the implication that I read into it. Sorry if I read too much into your text.

Hey guys. I've been gone for a few days, so I'm catching up in one post:

This is fantastic news, and an important first step. Not only do I think we should legalize it, but use the taxes made from hash to pay off the national debt and fund a government healthcare system.

Brilliant!! :P

Alcohol and tobacco are taxed seperately from clothing, food, gas, etc. Alcohol and tobacco have been proven to be harmful, just as weed has been proven to be harmful WHEN IT IS ABUSED. Smoking marijuana in excess can lead to the same kinds of health issues that smoking tobacco leads to. I don't see anything wrong with taxing grass. If you choose to use tobacco, you risk several types of cancers, heart disease, and other health problems. If you choose to use alcohol, you are again risking cancers, liver disease, heart disease, depression, and other health risks.

I think we should make THC butter like what is made in Canada instead of selling hash in the stores. This way, you can butter your bread, mix it with ingredients for baking, etc for the THC. Sell it and tax it, just like alcohol and tobacco. The THC is what gives the medical benefits anyway, so why smoke it and potentially damage your lungs?

BTW, Dave, I dig the M&M's pic.

Oh, but we aren't talking about casual use of MJ, PG. We're talking about MEDICINE. This is just as bad a s taxing someone's pain meds, if it's prescribed by a Dr for proper use. Thus the parallels with alcohol & tobacco don't exist. They are overstepping their bounds by taxing a medication.

'Nuff sed...

Yeah, I can see that. I was going to use the argument of "controlled substances," but half of the the pain meds available through the Rx are controlled. That wouldn't really work, would it?!?! :)

I can't argue with that Philby.

So then................

What is a controlled substance now and what are the future ones?

Well, if the health care package that many ppl want goes through, the list of future controlled substances will include (but not be restricted to); red meat, white meat, fish, shellfish, butter, eggs, cheese, peanuts, yogurt, milk, mushrooms, and many spices & herbs, due to their medicinal properties...

Present "controlled substances" are alcohol, tobacco, & any "drug."
