Maybe just try to be comfortable in what you are doing, no matter what skill you happen to be using. I don't feel that challenging your skill level is quite so important when the years pile up a bit. Or IMHO in expressing most songs .

Maybe start writing some song's just for yourself.. and try to get some gratification from that.
Get a part time hooker.

:P

I know how you feel bro. I've lost 10 friend's in 9 year's and life has been hitting me in the face a bit here lately too.
Adjustment's are bitch sometimes, but usually necessary in the mid years.
I got an offer to move to Austin to live and play/record. I'm considering it!

I'm just a little behind most of the posters in this thread - about 10 - 15 years. I have a tiny bit more vocal range now at 38 than I did at 21. About 2 notes maybe. I have much better stamina and I push it harder than I did then. Most of that comes from playing/singing full time. When I was 21 I was just a singer and couldn't play a lick. I have been progressively better as a musician since I started playing at 22. With the past 6 years showing the most progress.

Having said that I think about this topic every once in a while. It's scary. Working on cars you never know when a finger or hand might get hurt and I like to do that some. I don't like the idea of my voice aging. It's my favorite toy. Paul McCartney sounds good but old. He has lost some range. It's scary. I know I will just work within my limits like I always have but I am very unhappy about the idea that I will not be able to sing the songs I have written that go to the top of my current range. Sure you can drop a song a step or so but that SOUNDS LIKE CRAP to me. I heard the guess who do that to "American woman" and Percy Sledge do it to "when a man loves a woman." I can see why they did but... It sounded like TOTAL CRAP.

I will just savor every moment with my music like I do with my children. No where near as precious but important none the less. And work hard to keep what I have. A lot of it is stamina kept fresh through diet, WATER, and "exercise". We are working with muscles here.

On a positive note both sides of my family are known for longevity. My dad is 76. He golfs, hunts, builds cars, and drives tour buses all the time. His mom lived to 102!! The last 7 in a nursing home! My mom is 71 and in great shape. She watches my daughters while I work. She walks and works hard. Her doctor tells her she will live a long long time. Her mother is 97 and CAME TO MY SHOW IN AUSTIN! Her eyes, ears, body and mind all work great. She has only gotten a little bit wrinklier in my whole 38 years. A lot of 90+ year olds in my family on both sides and a few over 100. My goal is to be 100% like I am now until I am 55. And 90% until 65. I plan to play and sing forever. To what level? Only time will tell.

Whew - long post for me! I'm trying to compete with Craig!

Give it up Paul. 8) Captain got it right when he labeled me "verbose". Strangely though, I wear it as a badge of honor. LOL

btw... I never meant to suggest that McCartney or any of the rest still have all the tools they once did, just that they are still doing it, and obviously enjoying it. It's about adapting. And it's about love of your craft. If you still love it, why stop?

But I admire you Paul, that you are upping your game. I may be doing that in some ways, but stamina? Nowhere near what it once was. But the weight is my achilles heel. I really need to do something, or I won't be doing this much longer. The heart attack that sort of started this thread scares the f*ck out of me. I hear of people in their 40's dying of heart attacks all the time. I live off aspirin, which will probably cause me other problems, but I'm too damn scared of a heart attack to stop taking them every day. And yes John, I know that aspirin is no guarantee of anything. I just figure it lowers the risk some. Now I'll just die of internal bleeding instead, cause of too much aspirin I guess. LOL

My single biggest health improvement was when I licked Acid reflux. And I don't mean treated the symptoms with a proton pump inhibitor such as prilosec, zantac, protonix etc. I was on protonix and would get these spasms in my lower esophageal sphincter that were wicked!! I never had those before protonix. I didn't have acid anymore but then I started reading about old people on the proton pump inhibitors breaking hips and other bones. When you don't make enough acid you don't properly process the calcium in your food. You also don't kill some bad bacteria when your stomach doesn't make enough acid.
When I told my doctor she said "but you're not old" Duh! I will be old. And then I'll have 20 years of taking this stuff and lining the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies and weak bones.

I hear a lot of people say. Nexium (or any other brand) gave me my life back. Well I'm here to tell you I don't take any of that crap, and I dont have heartburn.

I EAT APPLES Not kidding. I never suffer from heartburn. When I eat a meal I eat an apple, half an apple, or some of an apple before during or after the meal. It has fixed me. I got back on coffee (when I want it - infrequently) and whatever else I want. I experimented with foods until I figured it out.

Lets see I could take the doctors advice. They have 50 or a hundred years of grinding up chemicals and testing it on us or I could hmmm.... let's see. Try something God made?!?!?! A superfood even!

I tell people all the time. I don't know if it works for everybody but this one thing was the last health issue I had after I dropped 30 lbs.

I know a lot of people are on these ppi these days. I'm not trying to insult anybody with this. But for crying out loud it's worth a shot!

My wife has reflux, I showed this to her and am going to encourage her to experiment with it as well.
Me, hell I can eat an old dead elephants foot with no I'll effect.
My wife however does not like me to eat sugar dates / dried dates.
But I love them, and the gass can be kind of fun LOL.

I refuse to take any of that sht advertised on tv; prilosec, claritin etc. It's kind of like if you burp or sneeze they'll try to convince you that you have a disease and they have a pill for it. Ask your doctor for it. It's expensive, but you need it. Oh and btw, side effects include internal bleeding, and death. But don't worry, the FDA has eveything under control, and if enough people die from it the FDA will pull it off the shelves in 5-10 years. That's plenty of time for the pharm companies to make billions from it and time enough for them to invent more pills with more scare-tactic commercials to go with them.

If I help one person it was SO worth it! Tell her to try. If I haven't had any apple lately and I get heartburn I eat some apple and it goes away immediately. Tell her to try from me! :D

Paul, she is at the Great Wal now scoring some apples and other needed staples.
I dont understand though why we have to pay for it. After all is'nt it my right to free food, clothing and heathcare? Damn dirty bastards, how can they live with themselves for profiting from something I need to live.
Sorry, tangent.

The only medication I take routienly is baby asperin and my thyroid replacement.
Without my thryroid replacement I get MEAN.
One day my research into TCM will find me a suitable natural rememdy.
But it will have to be free, freaking society owes it to me.

Oh wait!!
What if?
I have been reading up on the old solar cycle diet. And got an E mail froma nurse friend about eating fruit only on an empty stomach due to it converting (fat I believe it was) into acid.
What if the whole reflux thing is not too much acid. But either not enough / too weak or possibly the wrong type of acid?
The apple could in theory provide a more or different acidic matrix in which to digest the other foods more rapidly or completely?

Food for thought! :D

My uneducated experienced idea is that the fiber somehow helps the lower esophageal sphincter work properly and hold in the needed acid. The acid is not the problem. The LES not working properly is. I have read about a lot of people using apple cider vinegar to do the same thing though. I don't think that has fiber so I don't know. All I know is the results and how happy I am with them! Apples rule! :D
