You guys are tough on the ole gal.
The reality is she is at a higher level of performance than anyone who is posting here, including me. So Im not going to diss someone like this. I dont know what everyone means by lame performance, it looks pretty good to me. Is it great, well no. But it is a lot better than any of us could do.
How many folks on here have been asked by Def Leppard to sit in on a song. I think you would have to have played with them at some point to even make a judgement on this.

After an REO Speedwagon concert in Fort Smith, my drummer and I went to a late night club where some friends were playing and having jam session/open mic. We got up there and were playing when, in walks Kevin Cronin (lead singer for REO). He got up there with us and did a few rock standards, then asked if we knew any REO songs. The only one we knew was "Back On the Road Again" and he said he didn't sing that one. I told him that I did, but the bassist (from the other band) didn't know it. Kevin told him to hand him that bass and he played bass and sang back up while we played and sang HIS song. It was great!!!
I guess that would qualify me to comment on the Taylor Swift/Def Leppard thing, but I didn't see it.

I just saw this and it cracks me up. The performance, I dont see whats wrong with it. Def sounds good, Taylor is singing on pitch and looks like they are having fun doing it. When I first read some of the post I was expecting a trainwreck or something. I jsut dont get all the negativity, if its not your cup of tea, fine, but from where I stand I see nothing to get all upset about and like I said I doubt many of us on here could do any better.
Just my 2 cents, not trying to start anything with anyone. I actually watched it twice. Would I go out and buy it, no I wouldnt. But seeing a younger generation musician of another genre of music interpreting a song with the original artist, makes me feel warm. I guess it doesnt matter what I or you think anyway.

there are musicains (like steve via, pual gilburt)
then there are entertainers. (like MJ or this taylor swift.)
Just becuase you make money or have success doesnt make you a pro musician, it could just make you an entertainer. Bowlers make money playing bowling, but they cant out run a soccer player. See what Im saying? Success does not equate to greater musicain. In some cases (like pop culture and country) it makes you a terrible musicain, but at least they look good huh?.

See, I think an "artist" would absolutely do flips in his coffin if he knew that cheesebags were doing his music in a less than desirable fashion.
But the "musician", we'll they'll play with anyone to try and further themselves etc. (it's a muddled reasoning)

If taylor swift is the best this next generation has to offer, I guess thats the end of the music industry altogether.
i'll miss it. Some of my favorite bands were part of the fabled music industry... now we only have this horrid monster left. Ill remind everyone that her looks only run skin deep. A fixation that will one day be gone.

I was going to be negative and say the track with Taylor singing looked and sounded like they were all miming to a tape... were there amplifiers at the back I forget?
But after all the slagging off there's been I will only say that while I wasn't much moved or excited by either the song or her part in it... that I have heard plenty worse.
They played and sounded a bit like a pastiche of the archetypal metal band, but it was competent enough, and I thought she sang with them without looking overawed or too little-girlish, except for the flimsy dress when jeans and a vest might have looked more the part.
I really cannot get the "this is the death of music" angle at all: this is one song on one night, featuring one slightly out of her comfort zone but quite brave young artist... music is often about trying something new even if it doesn't quite gell.
For me, better that than seeing the same aging faces in say, Status Quo, yelling out the same songs decade after decade... after decade... after decade!
