Craig,

Great to see ya back, 'ol buddy! :D

The other day I found myself humming "It's No Crime" , an excellent example of no bullshit, blitz, rock composing.
I'd sure ' nuff appreciate if you can load that tune up on your player so the new folks can hear what good no nonsense tune smithing is all about.
(I had a crappy download of it on cassette, but have since misplaced it, and would like to hear it again.)

Sounds like its time to say "frig democracy" and put "The Craig Maxum Band" together. (just an 'ol fart's opinion.)

Time to move on and chalk the past up to experience.

Haven't read through the rest of the posts, but, it's sad to hear good things that come to an end. You're better off dealing with this now, then in the middle of a world tour or something and they do that to you. Could be worse, eh?

With all due respect, don't let em take credit for it. Copyright it if you haven't already.

Hope you're here to stay.

Hmmm... now where's Mike?

ANDRAGON:

I thought the same thing myself. This would have really sucked if they pulled this crap -AFTER- we started getting big. Their biggest complaint against me, was that I was too intense during practices, taking the fun out of it I guess. I told them that practice is fun when you are a cover band. When you are an original band, trying to get things tight and perfect, trying to get noticed so you can move up the ladder... Practice is not always going to be "fun" - It's alot of f*cking work! The fun comes when all the work pays off and you are in front of hundreds of people, blowing them away, because you are so tight, you wouldn't miss a note in your sleep. The reaction you get from being that good... That's the fun!

If a producer or A&R guy bothers to make a trip to see your band, and you blow it, he won't be making another trip anytime soon, if ever. And these people know each other and talk: "What did you say Doug? Going to see Southern Mischief? Don't waste your time. I saw them last weekend. The songs have potential, but they were sloppy as hell. They're not going anywhere. They just have a few rabid Georgia fans. They couldn't cut it nationally."

One of my lead guitarists, the lesser talented one, actually flubbed the break on "September" 4 out of 5 times on one stretch. It is a simple break, and he is the ONLY solo on that particular song, so it stands out like a sore thumb when he screwed it up. I had told him that everyone makes a mistake here and there, but the same mistake on the same song, 4 out of 5 times? I told him that I would be forced to drop the song, or give the break to the other guitarist, if this kept up.

Had it been me, and I made the same screw up even twice, I would have sat at home and played nothing but that lick for a solid hour, until I was sick of it, to force the muscle memory into gear, so I would get it right from then on, without even thinking about it.

But not this guy.

That always made me question his own sense of self. Doesn't it bother him that EVERYONE IN THE CLUB is watching him start his nice break and it's sounding good, then suddenly 5 to 7 notes, in some alien key come out of nowhere and makes what should be a beautiful break, into fingernails on a chalkboard, before he finally figures out where his fingers are, and puts them back where they are supposed to be!

I would be embarassed out of my mind to do it once, let alone 4 out of 5 times. Especially on a ballad, where everything is under a microscope.

And Yes to the copyrights.

I had copyrighted a few of my songs previously, but after this, I've been doing everything. 10 at a time. I had worried about compilation copyrights, but my industry friends agreed, that if someone showed interest in licensing just one of the songs, you can always file an individual copyright at a later date, and at least you are covered until that offer comes.

Hey Craig, nice to see you back dude!

You and I have already talked about this, and it does suck. I still run into my old drummer from time to time around town. We actually ended up on the same bill one night. Hahaha.. Although things got ugly at one point, both of us have no bitterness at all torard each other. Good musicians move on and prosper, mediocre ones stay stagnant or fade out.

While those guys might think they've moved on from the mean ol' Craig, how long before they do the same to each other later. You remember how you nailed my situation in the past. Well, me and the drummer have moved on and are prospering in other bands. Because of that, we both still have a lot of respect for each other. And I can tell he's been a little surprised at my growth after we had our falling out. It's obvious now who the REAL serious people were in our previous band. So time and hard work has healed any past wounds. Was it ego or passion that drove us apart? Probably a little of both. But it's been over long enough for none of it to matter anymore.

Nowadays neither of us really care about the past songs we worked on. Burn is just a song for us to reflect on. It's just a song for the archives now. I don't plan on ever playing the song again any time soon, neither does he.

I think for the current SM to do what they did was fvcked up. It's also a sign that they really don't know what they're doing and it shows that they're unprofessional. A true professional always has a sense that he ( or she) can write a better song time and time again.

September was definitely your best song, and as long as you have those rights you're good to go. Wasn't there another song you wrote about your son too? I remember a song like that being just as good. But seriously, let them dwell in the past. It's a false sense of musicianship which they deserve to be stuck with. You just keep doing what you do. You're gonna be fine. Consider September to be your past measuring stick, and keep striving to make bigger songs.

You know what I'm talking about. We both know you can do it. Now just do it. Forget about those guys and make a bigger legacy. Later on down the road will be the proof that you are always capable of that. It's a healing process, but being experienced musicians, we both know that none of this will matter later on.

I'm gonna give you a small sample of one of my recent writings which I think spells it all out. It's in Reggae form, but I think you'll get the message here:

Chant Jah make us know our right from wrong
Say Jah make us see our way home
So Jah make us chase away Babylon
True Jah make us be strong

Chant Jah make us know where we're from
Say Jah make us see where we've gone
So Jah make us chase away Babylon
True Jah make us be strong

And let this feeling take you to higher ground..

Yea, I know.. Me and Sans go way back.

Thanks man. It is spiritual. Wait till you actually hear it. We worked some more on it tonight.. Not sure how to describe it. It's uplifting and spooky at the same time. Hayden King is the only one on Bandmix who's heard it so far, but he heard the acoustic version. The electric version goes beyond what I ever expected. The song is called "From The Sky Down". We're recording a new full length CD soon and 2 of my songs will be on the CD. I promise you, you won't believe what you hear. From One Day Broken to now are as different as night and day.

5-days!! I'm so down to hear your new stuff!!

After so many years dealing in rockin' out, it becomes evident that we develop a love-hate relationship between our fellow players. I ain't no shrink, but I've been on enough trips around the Sun to know that INFLATED EGOS usually is at the root of bands imploding. A band leader must look after his or her own interests.

Craig,
Based on your drive and talent you don't need me to tell ya that your songs are merely eggs. Some golden ones for sure, but just eggs. What is most valuable is the goose that lays them!

Keep on ROCKIN" cause sound only propagates into the future.

I still think a well led CRAIG MAXiM BAND would be a great vehicle to drive you creative output. Modern tecnology is a great and powerful tool, but .....
Live music is where it's at.
