I heard a great Charlie Pride story on the radio a while back. An old country radio deejay was talking about the first time he went to see Charlie Pride in concert. It was right after Pride first started hitting the Country Billboard charts. This deejay was a young man at the time, heard Pride on the radio one day (he didn;t know he was black) and then that day saw he was playing a live show in the same town he lived in. So he went to the show and was sitting in the crowd waiting for the show to begin (he still didn't know Pride was black). EVERYBODY in the audience was white, the band members were all white, and then this black guy walks out on stage and this future deejay says "Who the hell is this _____ walking out on stage?" When Charlie starts singing he can't believe it. He said the entire audience went crazy standing on their feet applauding. I've always wondered why there hasn't been more blacks in Country music. (Could prejudice be a part of the reason?)...

167 out of 44,000 is excellent.
That puts you in the top 3/10 of 1%.

There was a gentleman on Mike Huckabbee's who was a black country sanger  He was pretty good. There was a show, similar to the American Idol-type show...it may have some on the coutry station. The title was something like "So You Wann Be a Country Singer" It is quite vague but I recall an R&B artist competing. I would have auditioned for a country band but I did not have access to a saxophone.

I think it's a lot simpler than that.

People play and write music that they can identify with; they mimic what they know and what they enjoy.

Most young black people nowadays come from an environment where they hear rap and R&B growing up, so when they come of age to start trying to express themselves in a musical fashion, that's what they do. Most young black people are not exposed to country music, so it leaves no impression on them.

I don't think it's simpler than that. Only one black country male star and absolutely NO black female country stars? Ever? Come on dude do the math.

Yes, I am sure you can go to Nashville and see thousands of wannabe country musicians of black, hispanic, and chinese heritage.
Generalised cultural seperation in things like the arts is not necesarily prejudice, nor is it necesarily bad. OMG, could you imagine what Rock N Roll would sound like today if not for the influence of the black blues / gospel music.
People naturally gravitate toward their own kind, even amoung same race.
We are not "all the same" any geneticist can tell you that.
Viv la diferance !!!

I can prove to you in one simple exercise that we ARE all the same. I am going to assume the answer to the following questions is YES:

Do you like good food? (Yes)
Do you like good sex? (I'm not qualifying your sexual preferences here.) (Yes).
Do you like good music? (Again I'm not qualifying what you consider good music.) (Yes)

See? Everybody's the same...

I will have to disagree Bob. We are not all the same. We are all children of the same Father. Being a nurse I know for a fact we are not the same.
Knowing the difference geneticly between the races can mean life or death in the healthcare world.
The symptoms of severe constipation in a white person, can be the life threatining sycle cell anemia in a black or pacific islander.
The normal core body temp for an Inuet, would indicate initial hypothermia in a Texas redneck.
Women do not display the same radiating pains as indicator of heartattack that men do.
Our souls are the same, yes. Our bodies and our cultures are not.

Mr.Writer, sorry Darius Rucker (Hooty And The Blowfish) has already beat you to it. He is in my opinion the new and next Charlie Pride. I know you guy's don't listen to much country music on here, I like all music except rap which I don't consider music. Darius Rucker has crossed over and is now a country artist. I swear that guy excells at whatever style of music he pursue's. The voice that God blessed him with and the abilty he has to tell a story with song is just phenomenal in my opinion. He has a kickass country album out now that is topping the country charts.

Our bodies and our cultures are not the same? You mean to tell me that there are people who cannot have sex together? Eat good food together? Listen to good music together? We are all homo sapiens. we are all the same specie, whether you like it or not. You have the God given right to divide yourself from any other person, but you also have the God given right to include yourself with any other person, differences in bodies and/or culture notwithstanding...I respect your opinion and agree with you, but I also respect my opinion and agree with myself. What anybody honestly believes in is their truth, and that cannot be denied...

Being black, and from my perspective, the predjudice about blacks singing country, is from the black community, and not the white. We are scared of how we would be percieved amoung our people. At the McCain there was a country singer- I forget his name. (He did look Funny however)But for one thing there is not a demand for back country singers except maybe West Va. Can you imagine seeing a black person with a cowboy hat on, tight jeans:) and some shitkickers. Ludicrous, well I won't answer that one. I enjoy country music. It's pure and simple. But I would never audition for a band-why (fear) of being percieved by my likeness (race) Tom-crossover,etc. Last night I wrote another country song-It's on my proflle. I can't remember the name of it now. Another reason, is that because country is a reminder of turbulent times in the African-American's mind. I've almost named all the reasons, except the last, and it's that sometimes a double coded (innocent as it may) is read into the songs, by some poor sensitive soul.
