Ok, so I was listening to a friends' band the other day and running their soundboard.. (kinda not really, just watching their led's to make sure they weren't clipping)

When I was asked to play a couple of tunes, which I did. They wanted to check the system against something different. I played the same old crap and it's what it is..(you know, ssdd)

Next thing you know, the one guy asks me what else I can do. I told him I only know the few tunes I practice regularly.

He frowns and grabs his head for a sec and says "Coldplay".
I look at him and sneer a little. He asks me if I know the tune "Trouble". I laugh and tell him only in a most basic fashion, saying I can't play it on guitar either. I tell him "that's really not my thing, man". He says no one is around except us and "we won't tell" as he laughs. I tell him I don't know the lyrics. He produces a copy.

I shrug, we take 2 minutes to go over the timing and lay out. They gently remove my guitar from my stiff fingers and I felt this huge feeling of dread. They laugh and tease me a little. I got a shot of tequila for courage and then they started into it. I thought it was horrible, as I missed my cue and had to be coaxed when and where etc.. I felt like a 1 legged clown in an ass kicking contest.

We played this thing for about 10 minutes and I felt lost and upset. I couldn't see anything that wasn't on the stage and they were playing a little louder than i like to practice.

After it was done, I noticed people came in from next door and were just sitting there listening. I literally broke out in a sweat and laughed nervously.

Long story short, people are pissed. His band asked me if I would be interested in a side project. I looked at them like they had 5 heads on one body.
My buddy is ANGRY! He ended up telling my other project that I might be "switching gears". They are angry as well now.
I ended up having a phone conversation and reassuring them I wasn't going that route.

I end up thinking that I might like taking that one tune and making it my own, as in doing it in my own style not like whatever that singers name is. He's good, but I don't really get his style.

Quick poll, followed by caustic comments, please.. It can't be any worse than the outright hostility I heard when my "pal" spilled the beans..

Sounds like you need to be near Chilled out people NOT people who are chilled out on booze or drugs.

Hell, if you enjoyed it, do whatever you want. So what if it ain't the some old! Nary a thing wrong with stretching a bit & trying new stuff, & if that pisses ppl off, well, let 'em be pissed.

I'm surprized this is even an issue with ya, Cap, from what I know of you o/l.

Real friends will understand, & support ya, even if it was only a 1-time thing. You might get teased a bit, but I think you can handle it.

What biz is it of anyone's if you DO do a side project, as long as it doesn't interfere with your main band?

Oh man, big tussle last night over this.

A few people got together in the basement and we pounded out a psychedelic copy of it. ( I dunno ) lol I think I would use it to calm down the crowd at the onset of the last set. (what last set?) lol

Then we did a straight version. (took me too many times to get it right and I felt haphazard) I also don't think I can do it justice. I always seem to want to ad lib the sucker.

Now I have a erm bassist calling me. He says I should give up my "drug-induced fantasies" and play a more mature type of regular music. He claims that "I owe it to myself". I think he's just trying to maneuver..

I think if anything, I'll lodge it somewhere where it won't do any damage. (the end or damn near the end)

And as for the side project, I am going to decline as I have some cry babies in tow. LOL And I don't want to lose my electric for some acoustic, that would be near suicidal for me.

Sounds like that bass player really needs a guitarist. I would never go to a band that disses the material I'm playing, esp if I like it. "More mature," indeed! Seems that HE might need to "mature" a bit.

What you owe to yourself isn't something that others can determine.

I've had ppl dis me cuz I play novelty songs. To them I say FU. I'm way more entertaining than they'll ever be, with their high-fallutin' ways & self-righteous attitudes.

Sounds like you made the right decision to me, but I wouldn't take the crybabies into consideration to come to that choice.

Capt, I get the feeling that any song you take on is going to sound like you.

Weve been picking up some disco songs just for the hell of it and before its over they turn into whatever it is I sound like. (Les Paul and Cranked Marshall) We couldnt get our singer to agree to Rollercoaster (SAY WHAT!!!!) we may just throw it in the middle of something just to f**k with him live.

Philby our singer is well a typical singer. I love him to death and have no issues with him, but he doesnt like to come to practice sessions, and besides weve been doing this for so long that theres really no reason. If me and the rest of the guys are practicing I will call him and tell him we are practicing, ussually he says I cnat make it and I will say well what do you want us to play thru.

Anyway, we will take little quotes from songs and throw them into other songs. It freaks him out sometimes cause we will do something like Simple Man and I will start playing the riff from WOnderful Tonite which he refuses to play, and then I will jump back over to something else.

Sometimes he gives us all the evil eye, just makes it fun and keeps everyone on their toes.

Oh I forgot what I was going to share. Our singer and bass player played in this real heavy band and are still in it if someone will pay them to get together. They both have long hair. We practiced friday night and our bass player cut his hair, I mean buzzed it. So me and the drummer have been telling everyone that we bet Andys hair that Kevin wouldnt show up for practice. We won and got to shave his head. This story has taken on a life of its on. Ive had a couple of people call me and say I cant believe you and Brooks shaved his head. When Kevin our singer gets wind of it all Hell will break loose, cause hes the only hippy left in the band. And for all he knows its his fault that Andy got the haircut!

Man I envy you! We were that tight, once...but then that one guy turned out to be a real butt-wipe...

Eh...doo-doo occurs, don't it?

It's great to see a band that gets along so well.
