I couldnt vote on this.

Even if I made a living on playing bass and vocalizing the most important factor is "Am I good?" Just as important "Am I as good as I could be?"

I would have to KNOW that before I could vote on this. And the Jury will be out for quite sometime I think.

I know some "professional" musicians that get air play, make good money, and really are terrible at what they do. But, they are professionals because they make their living by providing a service for a fee. That's one definition of "professional".

The term all depends upon who is using it. For example, if you want to be in a contest, but it is for amateurs only...that means only artists or bands that don't have a lable backing them. They play gigs and get paid, but they aren't a signed band yet. Semi-professionals I guess. Most people in this group have other jobs to support themselves and play music on the side for the enjoyments.

The definition of a professional band/artist/musician is somebody who gets paid enormous amounts of money, can't sing worth a sh*t, and gets to be on a reality show during rehab. JK

It's just a word...professional...who cares as long as you enjoy what you are doing. You don't need to be placed into a status....it doesn't change who you are musically...it's just a title and I tend to shy away from titles that place me into one group or another.

Getting paid for what you do means that you are a professional in that trade. It does not take into account monies paid, owed or even designate said qualities in trade.

At the end of the day if you are paid for something you are doing that as a professional. The word professional does not stipulate quality.

You can slap professional on a VAN. But only voters/payers/customers decide on if they will hire you. Back door traffic, backhanders and more are rife. You are right its a cut throat world.

Professional

Definition
Main criteria for professional include the following:

Academic qualifications - a doctoral or law degree - i.e., university college/institute
Expert and specialised knowledge in field which one is practising professionally

Excellent manual/practical and literary skills in relation to profession
High quality work in (examples): creations, products, services, presentations, consultancy, primary/other research, administrative, marketing or other work endeavours.

A high standard of professional ethics, behaviour and work activities while carrying out one's profession (as an employee, self-employed person, career, enterprise, business, company, or partnership/associate/colleague, etc.

Reasonable work moral and motivation. Having interest and desire to do a job well as well as holding positive attitude towards the profession are important elements in attaining a high level of professionalism.

Using the word "Professional" in music industry is a very loose term IMHO.

There are a lot of Rock Stars that are not professional, in that they have little knowledge of their instrument, marginal singers and songwriters, but have a large fan base and make lots of money. There are also semi famous players out there that fall into this category ....
But there are Rock Stars that are very Pro players and have become Rock Stars because of their ability and as musico we know who they are.

If you've ever played with a pro you will know the difference.

Most of the pro players that I consider as a pro, are multi-instrumentalist, songwiters and record producers that have a successful track record and all the things I put in my first post.

Just because you make money at music doesn't necessarily make you a pro.
