I assume that you're talking about the hundreds of ears here, Chip.. Yeah, invaluable.
Rats- I've always heard that yeh, you don't ever try to record then mix-down all in the same day. Record the tracks, then wait until the next day to mix. Too exausting to do all in the same day(s). Probably the same for mastering.. It just seems like mastering is kind of a different ballgame.. It's got to sound right for the car, the home stereo, the pc, etc,, but that's still not good enough.. it also has to have a signature sound, or at least a quality professional sound to get noticed or played..
I like the thought of "ready for radio" auto-mastering wizards on that very expensive piece of equipment .. who can afford that.. lol..not me..

Sorry ZX.
I don't know why I just said Ears? It was a very loooooooooooong day yesterday, many apologies.

What I meant to say was that I think someone's ears are the best mastering tool we own and because we are all different, see different things we'll all hear and see different things.

Sorry again. I'll get my coat since it is raining yet again. So much for dust falling on a cloudless night some weeks ago. 8)

Doode man, I don;t even dare to walk INTO that guys place!
I've worked for the past 10 years one door down from Bob's studio, but so far haven't worked up the nerve to wander in and say...something.

I sometimes pass him in the parking garage, when he's on his way into his building & I'm like oh man...it's him....Bob Ludwig...

He did Sting's Soul Cages CD . A masterful work.
Not to mention Billy Joel(I'mpretty sure) & others..
He's a legend.
Reading about his building construction is pretty interesting stuff.

I noticed on a Boston album a while back that every instrument seems 'compartmentilised', if you will, all very distinctive and separate within the stereo realm. Very clear and concise. Does anybody know how the big studios do it?, Or is it just a matter of lotsa money, pro equipment, and the recording engineer's talents?
Thanx,
Steve

Check out my posting "Analog vs. Digital Mastering" above....go to www.mixingandmastering.com [which I used to master my songs] or www.musichousemastering.com - two that I know of - also do a google search on CD mastering, analog mastering, etc.

Hayden- is it the 'razors edge' guy who posted here a while back?

no it wasn't him Z. I was led to them about 3 years ago and now I cant find the card. I guess it'll have to be google time!

This is all great info guys...
however I'm a bit of a tech dummy so I'm going to have to rely on other's to get my mastering done... somehow.
I tried to upload some of the song's I just copyrited buy my wireless connection sucks and can't pull it off. I'll be upgrading in a couple o weeks and will post em then.

Damnstraight BM rules, Rat! Lovitt!!!

It does sound like mastering is best left to the pros. Thanks for the links FellowsInRock. Good info. Especially the mixing part.
At $99 per song, though, I'm probably gonna have to wait a bit on this..
