Once, I had a pretty good factory job (if there is such a thing) in Memphis and it was during a time when jobs were few and far between. I was running the forklift and at times it would get more than hectic. I found out that another person there made more money than me just sitting around reading a book and occasionally advising someone having trouble with a machine. I mentioned this several times to my supervisor and always got the same old, "We don't have it in our budget to give you a raise." One day sh*t was hitting the fan all over the place and I was having to be in 3 places at once and was working my a$$ off, so I went up to my supervisor and told him I needed a raise. He gave me the same old line and I got off the forklift and told him he could just take over then, and quit right on the spot. I left there, not knowing how I was going to find another job. I stopped at a gas station and was filling up when a friend pulled up. He asked me what I was doing and I told him about leaving the job. Knowing how hard jobs were to find, he asked me what I was going to do. I noticed a construction site across the street, so I told him I was going to go to work over there. He said, "Oh, so you already had a job lined up before you quit." and I said, "Nope. I'm just going to make them hire me." He laughed and called me crazy and drove off. I pulled into the construction site and asked one of the workers, "Who's in charge of hiring around here?" and they pointed a man out. I walked up to him and matter of factly stated, "Hi, I'm Jeff Coley, and if you're looking for a good worker, I'm looking for a good job." I guess the optimism and confidence got to him. He laughed and put me to work hauling bricks in a wheelbarrow to the bricklayers. I jumped in there and started busting my butt and in a couple of weeks, he put me on with the carpenters and they were the elite on that site. They asked me how I got changed over so fast because most workers took months to move up if they moved up at all. I told them how I had gotten the job in the first place and that then I gave it my all every day that I was there. From then on, the job was gravy.
So I guess what I'm getting around to is, be sure you are confident and optimistic when talking to potential employers and it'll go a long way towards getting them to hire you. And then, back up your words, and you'll do well. And that's my 1/50th of a dollar. :)

I agree with your 1/50th of a Dollar entirely. I wonder sometimes if I am a little too confident for some people? I thin however at the end of the day I've been Self employed for sooooooo long its difficult knowing how to behave sometimes. I work bloody hard and always give 110% I've managed companies, lectured, taught people 2 trades and have some great references. Perhaps I'm just too big for my own boots?

I do have something in the pipeline that should provide some good income but again its self emp stuff, needs a lot of fine tuning and trust in working relationships, that is a way off yet though I fear.

Frankly if I had the chance I'd train to become a Chef. That costs money of course but at least it would be a USA accreditation and have more weight than my word and some bits of paper from the past.

Thanks folks.

My first job (as an adult, I been working since I was 13) was for an oil field service company. I was at their gate boots on lunch in hand at 5am when they unlocked it every morning for four days. On the fifth day a supervisor came out to where I was standing about 5:30 and said "this other bastard cant seem to get to work on time, if you want his job go get in that truck over there," pointing to one of their crew trucks.
Like J said ifn you want something be persistant!

Yes J's got it... in person is always better... and learn to speak American...:)

Words like wanker, alans, ballocks, air buscuit and get knotted don't always work so well!

LOL

Always thought of the English as our brothersand sisters across the pond.
Only get a bit mad when a european tries to tell me how little history we have or when they come up with a negative "only in america" comment.

As most have already said, times are tough, and I think it's only that, plus the fact that the home depot guy is a bit lax in his/her follow through.

Goodluck :)

I did notice that in NJ, people have a tendency to put down the English.

WE hear a lot of remarks like "slimey limey".

I don't get it, but I don't put much effort into understanding why either.

It's not been that bad but it does get boring sometimes. I do a very good impression of an American Accent which I sometimes throw back. :D

NJ is renowned for ignorance and that's from nicer locals here too.

lol You are correct sir..

You rarely seen too many Mensa members in NJ.

Someone told me once, "NJ, where the strong eat the weak" and I believe it.

Anyone with real brains gets out while the getting is good. (head hung low)

One Lady tapped me on the shoulder in a store some months ago.
"Are you from England?" She asked.
I replied "Yes"
"What on Earth are you doing in the Armpit of America?" She said :D

Yes you are right. Getting out of NJ is my #1 priority.

You could try doing voice-overs. Ppl love an English accent on those!

Now repeat after me - "Pump number five is on..."

I'd end up doing that one if I could pass the piss test. LOL

Well this saga hasn't ended. They didn't call back last week despite me calling in as I said before. Then I get a call saying they were a little disappointed that I had not got in..

EXCUSE ME! What time, where and when? !!!!

At the end of this call I had an option of 6, 7 or 8. pm This coming Wednesday. Of course I missed this call so called back again. Yet another date with an answer phone.

I know, I know. Go in and talk to someone. I'm doing that shortly since I have my car back. Anyway like I said. I called back. (twice now), nothing.

I think the HotDog stand is a really good idea myself

:D

The Government admits to an unemployment rate of % 9.4.
Yet that is based solely on people whom apply for unemployment benefits.
There are thousands maybe millions more like myself whom did not apply for any benefit.
The true unemployment rate is guestimated at % 14-18.
Now calculate in all those union and goverment jobs whom are living off the rest of ours tax moneys. Millions more on the take without benefit to the economy as a whole. Oh, lets not forget the hundreds of thousands who work for the subsidised banks and credit companies. In true economic terms they are not "employed " either.
Now we approach % 25 - 30.
Then you can add in the 600,000 "stimulus jobs" Obumer said he will "create" this summer. Not one of those jobs will make money for the economy, only take more away from the shrinking number of people who are productivly employed. (makeing income for themselves the business and the economy) The money to pay those 600,000 people will have to be gotten through taxes (more businesses go under) borowed from China (again) or Printed (economically useless to anyone)
This is not the way out of a depression.
