I know times are hard but...........
I've applied for several jobs in many fields all of which I am qualified for. Nothing.

The other day I got a call from home depot looking for a supervisor. Yeah I could do that and much more besides.
I called back and nothing in 5 days. I've called 4 times + twice today too. When I have got someone they tell me that the person hiring is out for the day?

I used to get sales jobs which is not my real thing in life but I became VERY GOOD at it. Of course sales are down, but who would hire and English guy?

Thoughts...................

I don't think we hate english people- now muslims.. middle eastern people, N korean, chinese, etc.. yeah.. waterboard their asses (not my personal feelings, but seemingly the feelings of typical americans / our government)..

It's just a BAD time to be looking for work right now... worst I've ever seen in this country.. And I don't think it's going to get better before it gets worse.

Thought about starting your own small business - hit the dirt and say "this is what I can do for you." ?

I have a friend who supplements his income with a power-washer he purchased. He goes door to door and says "let me get that oil off your driveway for 20 bucks". He was able to purchased a few washers and was hiring high-school kids to do the work after a time.

Just an idea.

Nothing to do with being English, just a tough time to look for work, a lot of competition. Most English people amuse or interest Americans. Keep at it, I finally found a job after six months of forced vacation. Now if I can just keep it...

I dont think its about where your from chip, but could it be your over qualified for the jobs your seeking , or It might be you want more to do what the jobs worth. I need a plumber or 2 right now, and I cant find anyone thats capable of doing anything I need. But its been like that in my trade for 25 years .Times have been hard trying to collect money for work weve done, and everyone wants a top shelf job done for nothing. Most of the emplyers you are talking to arent sure the bad stuff is getting better yet and are holding out on hiring just yet , at least thats the way Ive been thinking. I hope your able to find something that will suit you soon. Be carefull and safe out there.

Sorry folks just stressed like everyone else. I called again today and the same thing, no one there. I did get told that someone would call me today but today is the Interview day/night whatever?

Perhaps they are just disorganized? I do agree with one point made. my voice does sound hoity toity. In fact I've lost self employed jobs because people thought I would be too expensive owing to it.

Anyway, times are tough and I should not have broached the subject, many apologies.

Chippy, can you just go over there and ask for their human resources manager. It is always best to show up when looking for a job, most companies view a phone call as someone who is not putting forth the full effort. These times remind me of the economic downturn of the early 80's. Back in those times down here in Houston the economy was booming better than it ever has. I mean all you had to do is half heartedly try in a small buisness and you were making money hand over fist. You see Houston in those days was known as an oil town our economy was exsteamly dependent on the oil buisness. The economy has since diversified. When the downturn hit Texas around 1983 it went to hell in a handbasket you could not buy a job. All of the construction sites had huge signs out saying not hiring because they were beginning to become annoyed with all the job seekers they made me feel guilty for asking for a job. You talk about hard times I don't know how my young family survived it was horrible. We call that here in Texas the oil bust of the 1980's. Every once in a while you will see an old pickup truck driving down the road with an old faded bumper sticker on it that reads
"GOD PLEASE GIVE US ANOTHER OIL BOOM I SWEAR I WON'T PISS THIS ONE AWAY". It depresses me to even remember those times and my heart goes out to the rest of you out there that are unemployed eventually it starts to feel like you will never find a job but remain vigilant these hard times will end soon I pray.

Eek That does sound bad Haley. Reminds me a little of the collapsed coal mining era in Britain where I was one of the lucky ones and always had work. I think you nailed it in there too Haley.
They want a set time for you being there, you have to take a test or two then eventually you get to see the person involved. Trouble is to get that exact time they need to call me, and I've kept trying to call.
