I generaly detest Greatist Hits Albums from anyone. The sequence of an album is as important as the individual songs IMO.

And you know I'm with Slipped on KISS ALIVE

My choices (and opinions):

Hysteria-Def Leppard. How many bands follow up their biggest album with a BIGGER one. If my memory serves, 8 of 12 songs were singles and, to varying degrees, hits.

INXS-Kick. INXS was a popular band, with a few hits. Kick put them on top. Consistently strong material throughout the album.

The Black Album-Metallica. Mainstream Metal? Although it alienated some hardcore fans, the album solidified them as one of the few definitive metal bands.

Appetite for Destruction-Guns 'N' Roses. Graphic, disturbing ooze flowed from every note on this set (okay, now I'm getting carried away) and changed the landscape of music forever.

For the record, I'm not a big GNR or Metallica fan. Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Personally, I'd go with the another 1987, put in Master of Puppets and take out the black album. I liked Enter Sandman, but most of the black album is kinda...eehhh. Metallica being edited by a hard rock producer to be a rock n roll/ mtv band. Master of Puppets was their peak for me.

INXS I loved back then, I can't lie. But not so much now. Devil inside still holds up. Def Leppard was never my thing, too corny and predictable and melodramatic drums and riffs. I'll sing along to Photograph, every once in awhile, though. Appetite is legendary of course, not enough can be said about how good that album is. Probably (and sadly) we will never hear another pure rock n' roll album in our lifetime that good.

The Stones... Exile and Sticky. Be careful. You can get into those two albums and not get out of them for years. Be warned if you never have. ;)

I'm gonna check out some of the suggestions I've never listened to much, though. Cool thread!!!!

Enchant - Blueprint of the World
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Metallica - Black (the album that turned me on to metal)

Okay, ratsass - if you liked "Rift," you have GOT to check out "A Picture Of Nectar," &/or "Hoist," &/or "Lawn Boy." Just sayin'.

I got 'em all. That was just the first one I heard and it got me into them. Most of the bands I listed, I've gotten all of their CD's over the years. Even hard to find ones, if someone has the vinyl, I've got a turntable and my stereo is hooked up to my computer so I can burn a CD of it. Examples: UFO - "No Heavy Petting" and Lou Reed - "Rock and Roll Animal".
