I agree Fisherman. It's cool to do covers when you can add your own twist to it. The Wilson sisters from Heart used to be a Led Zep cover band before doing their own thing. When they were finally doing their own tunes, they were one of the best bands out there, simply awesome vocals and musicianship.

Hey Gang,

Yeah, Ive notice that us over 40 gang pretty much posted the same concept on this subject...BC (before computers) back when going out to hear your favorite band was still a viable passtime,If you were playin the circuit , you covered everyone from every genre....Male or female , didnt matter....Most of the young cats I play with now have never had any concept of that...I cant even compare Road exps' really with the under 35 road drummers that come into the store(drum shop) because things have so drastically changed...All those drummers are playin a specific style within a genre...
Mostly a form of metal....I couldnt imagine playin within a specific genre 6nites a week....I woulda SURELY drank myself to death...Apples and oranges.....Thats why we get such stark differences of opinion on subjects like this and others.
And LadyRocker, I think the bands name was Paul D &TNT back in 85 at the Zodiac...That band morfed 5-6 times over 6 yrs with name changes...
Cant be sure though

Hey KIDD, Johnnyrocker & Bassboy!!

Well, That's what I'm tryin to do....start my own band!! That's why I joined here!! I even have trouble doin that because of the "F" word (The F-word = FEMALE)

But, I won't give up!!
I don't want to start a big argument here or anything Fisherman Bob ....but, I kinda disagree when it comes to performing cover tunes...... It is kewl to add your own twist to stuff, which I do on occasion, BUT, when you have a great song, that's great the way it is, Why change or tweek it??? I've seen MANY vocalist totally SLAUGHTER songs by trying to do there own thing with it!! On occasion, there's one out there that can do something amazing with something that's already great..... but, I also have found when you're out giggin, that ppl like to hear the songs as close as possible, it's all about "Familiarity" and what they are "expecting" to hear!
I also have found, unless you're playing a club that wants bands that play only originals.....incorperating you're own originals can be tuff too-- because ppl want the "familiar" thing, so they can sing along, or whatever... or maybe they're partial to someones vocals.... and if ya don't try to get it close....unless you've done something super amazing with it, ppl are disappointed, and the word gets around FAST!!

Thanks you guys for all your support though!! Ya all make me feel good  !! :D

Thanks for the compliment Lady R....

Our "twist" on Pink Houses was having our female singer take the second verse and then added 4-part harmonies to areas that John Cougar sang by himself. We were still working things out when we taped this.

It was a great opening tune. It was safe and helped us warm up before getting into the more busier tunes whether vocally or instrument wise.

Keep posting Ms. Rocker.....it's great to see enlightening, polite, and enthusiastic posts back upon this forum. It may just keep me a paying member if this keeps up !!

I think I would rather hear a female do a guy song than the other way around!

Lady Rocker, if you lived in my area, I'd hire you!

Lady R.....just wonderin', whom were you referring to in regards to the "hot" comment?

sorry Lady R, if I would just read things more carefully, I wouldn't ask dumb questions.

It has brought a subject to mind that I haven't seen covered in the forum yet and that is:

While performing at gigs we are on stage watching the crowd and what goes on. For instance, the pick ups, the domestic arguments, bar fights, someone coming in with one date and leaving with another, etc. What "entertaining" things has any of our fellow musicians witnessed while performing?

Here's one from my past:

My band was performing in a small town bar one night when there was this handicapped guy in a wheelchair enjoying himself. After drinking a few shots decided he wanted to hear a tune that we didn't know. He got pissed and was using his motorized wheelchair to run over our lead singer. It was hilarious. He was trying to sing while running away from this dude.

Any good stories out there?

That IS hilarious!! I don't believe anything like that ever happened at any of the gigs I was at!!

Most definitely alcohol will make ppl fight now, doesn't it!!

I've seen a few dandies in my day!! One time in a small bar we played these two guys got into a fight -- it got taken outside -- and WOW!!

One guy was bouncing the other guys head off the pavement in the parking lot.......LOTS of blood!! Not good!! The guy lay on the sidewalk bleeding and half unconcious....but,, when the ambulance got there, the guy refused help and got up and walked off!!

One time I was the one fighting :o !! There I was mindin my own business, performing and havin a good ol time, and some woman come out of the audience and attacked me!!!

I really don't know what her deal was....jealous or something..... but, anyway, I told the club owner to boot her out or I wasn't going to continue.... pretty much end of story!

I'll have to rack my brain!! I don't know if I could dig up any funny stories or not!! :?

I just wanted to add to the post that I have not heard your voice LadyRocker, but it appears ppl on here like it, I am sure it is awesome! I need to take a listen, but I just wanted to point out that versatility is always a good seller.

I've learned (as my gma would say. hahaha) that if a woman can sing a song that was originally sang by a man that it increases her stock. Most people who have given me advice has mentioned that at one time or another. My first Band audition is in June... whoo hooo! and one of the songs that they incorporate in their gig (with a current female singer who is leaving bc she got a contract in Nashville... go Cassandra!! :)) is Old Time Rock n Roll. She also sings Faron Young, Leavin' and Sayin' Goodbye.

So, you are saying that typically you are not given a chance to sing because the band you are trying out for only performs songs for male vocals? From what I hear on here there are a lot of prejudices against woman in the industry. I hate to hear this. Here is me being the optimist that I am... do you think it has more to do with the image that they are trying to project? All male band?

There is a band here in Ohio called the Shagadellics. They rock out to 70s tunes! They preform I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor and their lead singer is a man. I love jamming to his version. Like I said, I think you need versatility whether it is achieved by having a male and female singer both in the band or by having one sex perform songs that were made famous by the opposite sex.

Bass Boy~ that story is freakin hillarious. I can just see the lead singer running around. Did he have a wired mic?!?! If so, did he tangle up the man in the chair? hehehe

Hi Jacq.....

It was a wired mic but he was able to dodge the wheelchair by jumping to the left and to the right......geez....I'm laughing just thinking about it again. The guy in the wheelchair had to keep backing up so he could get another run at him !!

Our poor singer, he wasn't sure what to do. He couldn't just pop this guy or knock his chair over, there was nothing else to do but dodge him.

Finally a bouncer raced over and picked up the wheelchair from behind so the wheels just spun in the air.

We took a break right after, we couldn't play anymore because we were laughing so much.

I started another post regarding this subject so I wouldn't hijack the original subject. Hopefully there will be more stories like this.

Take care mama
