Ratsass,

Yeah Im with you on the classic alternative.

Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Janes Addiction, AIC, STP, RHCP, all that wave of bands came around 1990 or a little later so they are the new classic rock.

Colors being 37 yrs old I would shoot for a people 25 to 50. And you might look at some of the real dance songs Brickhouse, Roadhouse Blues, Hard To Handle, Honky Tonk Women oddly these old standards play well to young and old audiences.

In the end you have to be happy with the songs you play. If you listen on my player to the song THE FUNK. We combined Play That Funky Music, Superstition, We Want The FUnk, and Thank U For Lettin Me Be Myself into one long song and I dont play the song like the record. The guitar has real edge to it. We did our version and over the years this has become our closing song. Medleys can be cool. You can just take a verse of this song a verse of that song and tie them together.

I would recomend putting your own identity into the songs. When our band plays Sweet Home Alabama, sometimes I give it a blues feel sometimes an R&B feel, sometimes a swing feel. I invert chords me and our bassist do little Cream style tandem runs, I mean as a player keep it fun. People hear the first 4 bars and they are on the dance floor, our singer will sing Sweet Home Haywood County or where ever we are and turn the song into a sing along. We do those things to keep these old standards fresh and alive for us. But it also keeps it real for the audience. If you are doing the standards try to make them stand out in some way.

I just hate to see a new band go out and decide we are going to do it this way and then get slammed at a few gigs. It happens to us and weve got 1000 gigs or so under our belts, and our song list is back up around the 300 song mark. As a cover artist the bigger your song list the better you will be prepared. Heck last weekend we threw Wipeout in the mix and the people danced their tails off to it, and Im talking about people in their mid 20s.

Good Luck, I think Ive said enough on this
