Ok- thanx for all the input everybody.. I think I'll just stay "retro" and see where it gets me... It seems to be semi-popular still, judging from the number of Ozzy fans and classic rock radio stations still out there, and I also dont really like the "new metal" all that much either...
Peace!
ThanX!

I just watched a recent Moody Blues concert from Albert Hall on PBS, and I gotta tell y'all, Justin Hayward ripped up his solo on "Ride My See Saw just as good as when I seen him do it at the Fillmore East back around 68!

Earlier I was workin' back at my new house and I heard Jorma Kaukonen playing live on the World Cafe' radio show, and at 68, he playes better then ever!

Good to hear that good guitar playin' don't ever go out of style.

ZXYZ wrote:Thanks 4 the input Keith. I guess i should clarify, George. By solo I meant in the traditional sense, not being the only one playing. I just dont hear verse-bridge-verse-solo-bridge-verse-verse (or something like that) anymore. (plus i'm really not speaking of Vai, Satriani, DreamTheater etc) just the more conventional mainstream hard-rock groups... I was just wondering if the solo is going out of style and one would be considered a dino for putting one in a new song (not that i care; music is whatever you feel like putting out there, of course)..

music is what you feel like putting out there, but I get really bored with that style of verse-bridge-verse-solo-etc etc I dunno, I always preferred distinct movements in a piece, if a solo worked in there sweet but you shouldn't force it in just to have one

Listen to Snake Devil by Scary Kids Scaring Kids. Lead solos aren't dead, but they definitely aren't as common, unless it's in progressive stuff.

Hell, I have to force myself NOT to solo between EVERY verse and chorus. :)

Most of the songs my band does has a guitar solo, so I get to do one almost every song.

Our drummer has this little quirky roll he does that means hes fixing to end the song. One night he and our bass player got together and basically ended every song right before the solo sections. It got kinda comical, cause I would be al set to go into my solo and then they would just end it, over and over again. Not that it really matters but its great to be in a group where we all know each other so well that we can pull stuff like this off and the audience doesnt know it wasnt preplanned.

Im in agreement, a lot of the newer heavy rock stuff is more rythymic than old school hard rock was. Take a song like Disturbs Down With The Sickness, the guitar basically follows the drums. I like that song although we dont cover it. I dont think Disturbed did any solos until the last album.

I like to hear solos, I guess cause I am a guitar player and that is my playground in the songs. But I do at times find myself doing rythmic things during solos sometimes to change it up.

Solos are making a small comeback. There was a period there for a while where it went out of style (thanks Nirvana - another reason you guys sucked). But a few bands are bringing it back. Alter Bridge, for example. Mark Tremonti upped his game after Creed disbanded.

Of course, if you're a prog-head, like me, solos never left :)
