Thanks for the info shredd, so far I've only found a couple via the online open mic site.

openmics.org

It lists Money Plays, Aces & Eights and Sand dollar, Thursday, Monday & Sunday nights respectively. Also saw Moondoggies posted on CL, Friday nights, might check that one out too. If you can make one that would be way cool. That was the biggest disappointment when I met JW in Memphis, he didn't have any gigs booked at the time I went through and as far as I know no open mics to hit either, but it was also right on top of christmas, and freezing, plus all my guitars were buried since I was packed for a long term stay up north. But we did have a good time, and it was great to meet him and his family, and on the trip back I had a couple of guitars packed so they could be reached and got a couple of pics of him with my Cort. This time I brought the Washburn BT-2.

I'll show sis the list and we'll probably plan to show up for one of those nights.

Anyway, hope this helps. I'm on my way to God's Country. Should be back somewhere around Mon.

Thanks for the list, good to know. I'll be checking in now and then when I can, dumped a cup of coffee in my laptop yesterday and it's toasted, won't even blink now. No, it was not fun...just hope I can retrieve all my pictures once I manage to locate another one. Somewhere around 2GB of pictures, including all of those I've taken on this trip. Not sure how many, but I do know one folder has 315 pictures and another has over 200, and I think I have around 7 or 8 folders from this trip, around 100 videos (total, not just the road trip), plus over a dozen folders of pics from wildlife viewing spots back home...at least 2000 pics there...As of this moment all I have definite access to is those already posted on photobucket...a dozen or so...yeah it SUCKS...

I think I've copied a couple hundred to my computer at home but that's it. Nothing from this trip was backed up yet.

Pete if you need help let me know. I'll need your Laptop however, you'll need to send it of course.
I've done a lot of data retrieval and though nothing is guaranteed I had some good successes.
Free of course because your are a Muso!

Let me know.
Chippy.

Thanks chippy but I can handle it with no problem. I seriously doubt the hard drive is damaged, they're sealed and it didn't have any goo on it when I opened the machine up. Yes I know how to take a laptop apart. I don't like it, 2 really frustrating hours and I always have screws left over when I put them back together, but I've opened up 20 or 30.

I've been a computer tech for over 10 years, I've built and repaired hundreds. I have everything I need to handle this, but it's all halfway across the country. Looking at external hard drive enclosures right now, that will be the easiest way to deal with it and once I get pictures transferred to some other machine (I have 3 running and another mostly built) it can be used for removable storage. Biggest problem is I'm 1000 miles from my tools and computers...I can retrieve the pictures even if the hard drive has been formatted, that part is no problem as long as the drive is not physically damaged...and I would be very surprised if it were.

Ya know, the tech support nightmare is that some people have actually tried to use CD ROM drives as cup holders...it's still funny though. And that's not the dumbest of issues tech support people have had to deal with by far...Trust me, I've seen people who shouldn't be in the same county with a computer. (No, I'm not referring to anyone on this forum) One of the local guys where I live opened up a shop, told me one day he had a motherboard with a virus on it...and insisted the motherboard had a virus, even after I told him that was impossible, the motherboard has no way to store a virus, so as soon as it's shut down anything like that is gone, the motherboard has no permanent storage. And this guy actually opened a computer shop and charged people for that kind of stupidity...I finally told him I wanted to see thie motherboard, he said he had thrown it away.

This is not a huge problem, I can't afford another laptop, that sucks, and I'm halfway across the country from my tools and equipment, that means I can't find out for sure I can get all my pictures back for 2 more weeks, but getting them back is no big problem as long as the hard drive is not damaged. An external laptop drive enclosure would be easiest, but I also have a half dozen Linux live CD's that would also do the trick, with a CD burner.

I was definitely a shocker though...the worst part is I might have been able to save it, but wasn't completely alert yet, I just stood there stunned and stared at it instead of punching the power button and shutting the damn thing down quick as possible...bad move, space cadet...

Sorry I should not assume.
No worries. I've had dead drives and managed to get info back off them through freezing it in the freezer which is a neat trick but it only gives you about 5 minutes play time to get stuff out.

Also Linux PCLinux will open drives and allow for data pull through.
Hope you get it sorted.
Very best.

Got an external drive enclosure yesterday, my sister's machine reads the hard drive from my dead laptop just fine, so recovering the pictures on it will be no problem. I did browse through the picture folders to be sure, and I wasn't too worried about it to begin with, I would have been very surprised if any hard rive damage did occur since they are sealed and I found no evidence of liquid on the drive, all the goo was on the motherboard and around the CPU.

Since the insides are incredibly susceptible to dust, hard drives are sealed to maintain a dust free environment. The read/write heads float above the drive platters on a cushion of air created by the spinning of the platters, the tiniest dust particle would be enough to get between platter and head, and that would scratch the polished magnetic surface, destroying the entire drive. The drive is originally assmbled in a "white room", which is an entirely dust and moisture free controlled atmosphere. This is necessary to keep dust out during the original assembly, the insides are that delicate. Ditto for refurbished drives, and some data recovery operations, those also require a white room.

So a liquid spill is not likely to cause serious problems, if the drive is sealed well enough to keep dust and moisture out, liquid - as opposed to moisture/humidity in gaseous form - is not very likely to get in either.

Anyway it didn't cause any real problems and I didn't lose thousands of pictures. It's all still there, and I already transferred around 600MB of keepers to my home computer and burned them to CD to give my mother, so most of the better shots taken before this trip are already backed up. I'll sort through them and do the same for the better shots from the road trip after I return. That will be a chore, after looking through them I'll probably fill 2 CD's...I have that many that came out good already.

Hey Pete, my phone is shut off at the moment. It should be turned back on in about an hour.

Vox lounge at 8 tonight. should be a great time.

I was told that we're not actually playing the "concert" the day of the festival (Sat). We're playing short stints during the day. I guess we're the band that keeps people entertained between all the belly dancing stuff.

I was also told that Sunday's Penthouse gig isn't a "stripper" night. It's a regular gig. Should be pretty cool as well. However we don't go on 'till 11.

Anyway, hope to see you at one of them.

Peace.

PS. Directions to the Vox:

I-15 to 215 (east) By the airport. Go east, exit Eastern ave. Go South past St. Rose to Horizon. Left (east) on Horizon. 1-block down on the left hand side you'll see the Vox.

Shredd - We had to go to LA yesterday, didn't see your post till this morning. Picked up another laptop to replace the one I fried, did a bit of sightseeing and drove back to Vegas, got here after midnight.

I'll try to make it Saturday, that's the one we talked about going to anyway.

Thought I'd better get things rolling, at the moment the plan is to fly back the 9th, hour layover in Houston, land in Little rock around 8:15PM. SO...

J Haley and Ratsass need to contact me, I'll be in your areas this coming Saturday. If possible I would enjoy meeting both of you, so far I've met JW123, the Kidd and Shredd6 on my road trips the past few months, all great guys and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of those meetings.

J Haley - Not sure but I think the Houston layover is around 6PM, but don't know if it's Hobby or Intercontinental. I'll have to find out, and if you can spare an hour or so and don't mind a trip to the airport, it would be cool to meet in person for a few minutes. Keep an eye on this thread, I'll find out the details soon and let you know.

Rat - Already know touchdown in Little Rock is at 8:15PM Saturday the 9th, a friend is coming from Louisiana to meet me at the airport and already said a stop somewhere for coffee would be cool, so if you aren't too far from Little Rock and know of a decent place to grab a cuppa, let me know. On the way here we didn't get close to Arkansas, my sister had a friend in the hospital in Tulsa so we took a side trip to visit her and went through Texas and Oklahoma instead. (she had a little one a few days later, 2 months premature and under 5lbs I think, but both are doing fine.)

Get in touch, I'll be watching this thread daily. Probably AM and PM...
