OK a totaly off topic strange request. Although being a member of various forums, I think this is the only one that is predominantly American and qualified to comment on this strange request for info. I was having a discussion with my wife whom has amongst many other countries, travelled all but 2 of the American states. Ok this is the question I asked her, as a non conformist that has been battling the secret familly court system in the UK for 8 years trying to fight for contact with my son. Finally to have my son live with us and pick up what was left of him after being with a psycopathic mother for so long. (Now the 3 of us live outwith the system constantly travelling in a mobile home).
What state in North America would you advocate as being a good place for us to spend some time?. A state that would be good for the following type of person:- Misanthropic, artisan/musician, totally into nature, hunting fishing and wild food foraging. Non religious and doesn't like being told what to do. Yet on the other hand does not like telling other people what to do. My wife from her experience recomended Montana. Personally although fairly well travelled I have never been to the states so dont have a clue. Just thought I would post this on the off chance that a response from someone whom may know of a suitable state where a non conformist back to basics type wierdo might fit in for a while :) Is she correct with Montana or do you guys recomend another state.

Any place but Texas. We got enough people in the boat who dont want to paddle now.

Micawber, there are places in Texas that have exactly what you are looking for, although it can get very warm here, the Austin area is heaven to me it is a little crowded there but a 70 to 100 mile drive in any direction will put you in some of the most beautiful country god ever created (I personally love the hill country) around the Frio River. The artistic community especially the music community is really happening there.
I hope you find what you are looking for, good luck! :D

Lol first response as expected, perhaps I should have said someone who likes being told what to do and loves Jesus.

Cheers, not sure if it would ever happen, just wondered if my wifes guess at Montana was correct or not. :)

How do you know that bible boy, did your comic tell you so. The wife said that people like you still exist in the states. You lot are never heard of in the uk anymore, perhaps because we are realistic. Maybe the earth is only a few thousand years old lol. Hey bible boy why is the sea salty yet many inland lakes are freshwater. Thought the flood might have diluted all water to the same level of salt. Arc 40 days rain etc etc bollocks, get half a brain and start asking a few questions before you start blabbing that crap, joke boy. Strange to get a negative comment to such a daft light hearted thread, of course I did mention non religious. Maybe that is threatening to you?

Realistically, you can't judge a whole state in regards to what you're looking for. Most states will have certain places that will fill your criteria and others that don't. I live in Arkansas now, have been here for 25 years. It is called the Natural State for a reason. I love it because of the mountains in my area. Eureka Springs is about 2 1/2 hours north of where I live and it is a community of artisans and musicians. You'd probably find it to your liking, but I'm sure other states have somewhere similar, you just have to find it.

Thanks ratsass, sounds like a good place. We live mostly in countryside areas and try and do our own thing. We travel around now selling what we make as silver and goldsmiths. Always thought that the uk was far to small for this sort of living and have always been intruiged by the states. Wilderness on a massive scale, instead of just a few square miles as in the uk. Cheers.

well guys how bouts where ever they end up someone from here should be waiting for them and duct tape them in place "welcome to america now stay put" I'd say western vermont is pretty good, or eastern ny, but thats the area that I'm from, all the luxury of being in the woods all the practicality of being in civilization

Having lived in several states and have traveled all of them, Montana, is very RED NECK. The safest state is Idaho. The city with the “open mind” and is surrounded with beauty beyond compare is Duluth, Minnesota and you get the true four seasons. If it was not for my kids and grandson I would live in the Black Forest of southern Germany.

There're wilds places in WV...Dolly Sodds is a glacial park, with lots of blueberry & even cranberry bogs, I've heard, yet it abuts lower elevations that supply lots of diferent fare.

Good luck in your search. I son't think there's anywhere on Earth to live as a nomad off the land by foraging & fishing without permits & such.

Oh, there are many christian folk here, too. They 're everywhere, it seems. Best to learn to live with them if you wanna come to the states without insulting or even questioning their beliefes in many cases - it is just good sens to try to get along with your neighbors, cuz you never know when you might need their help or need to offer it, just to remain human.
