Brad, I think even you would agree that Martin low-ends, for around $300-350, are entry level guitars.

Takamine & Alvarez low ends are higher than that, aren't they?

Heck, sans, try a Johnson...I bought one at the beach for $70 just to play on the shoreline...it's a good lil beater axe. you can get one with a pickup for about $109, at least at my buddy's music store. Squarish neck, but it'll make you a stronger player.

And don't forget the pawn shops when you're shopping! Some great buys there. I got an Oscar Schmidtt once at a pawn shop, which I've turned into a hugh strung, since I reaplced it with my Dean.

Had a Takamine years ago...gave it to my son...wish I'da kept it, t'was a goodly axe.

There are $300 Martins? Ok, sorry 'bout that... BTW, are you referring to Martin's economy brand, Sigma? I just remembered Sigma.

No, wasn't talking Sigma...believe it or not I've seen some newer axes for sale with Taylor-made necks, non-glassy tops for around $300-350 at a store in Hagerstown, MD. Some of them had non-wood backs, but not round like Ovations.

I just looked on Martin's site, but saw no mention of them there...wonder why?

www.sigmaguitars.com/

From 1970 to 2007, Sigma Guitars, a division of C.F. Martin, provided players with an affordable option in tradition and value.

I did a little research, and you're right, of course. The DX and LX series, right? They've expanded this line. It used to just be the DXM. My bad...

Ok i did a little shoppin today, not as much as I'd liked but I had stuff to do on the family business side of life (hope they dont find the body  )
Saw some real nice acoustic guitars. First one I picked up I really liked till I saw the $1600.00 on the tag  WTF. I very carefully put her back!
I did spy some Martin's in the $400 - $500 range. Played a little bit on a >$300 Yamaha and really liked the thin and somewhat narrow neck profile. I have small hands and practaclly no thumb thanks to my Mom's side of the family. Sounded ok to me, a little soft maybe but the pricks dont want no picks. so who knows.
Just a side note my eldest son is competing in UIL with his orchestra today. He plays the violin. 7th grade and he is already taller than me. He is a good kid and I'm proud of him. :D

Ihad my heart set on buying a Martin HD28 a few years sgo. I had the money in hand. Got to the music store and my eye first caught a Martin D18 (used). I played it and fell in love. Saved myself much more than half the money. Put a Baggs under bridge pickup and a Baggs Paracoustic DI with the money I saved and STILL had enough money left over to buy a Mex Telecaster! I guess what I'm saying is, keep an open ear! Looks are one thing, but you have to live with it, so try them all.

Was in a pawn shop and saw some Kona acoustics. Played around on them and they felt pretty good. They were brand new as the pawn shop carried some lower end stuff. The low end Konas (acoustic electric) went for about $125. The guy showed me a top end Kona that went for $300 (gold plated hardware and mother of pearl inlays). It had been damaged in shipping (a little nick on the front) and he let me have it for $100. I've had it 7 or 8 years now and everyone that plays it loves the sound and the feel.

Make sure to check Craigslist for used one's too. My girlfriend bought me a used Ovation Legend accoustic/electric for my birthday last year. It's in brand new condition, has a bound ebony fretboard w/abalone inlays & Sperzal tuners. I threw a new set of D'Addario EJ26 light strings on it and fell in love. It's got nice light action....I can even play lead runs on it and I've never owned an accoustic I could do that on. They go for about $750 new but she got it for $300.

This is the best advice when buying any guitar, but especially an acoustic.

You have to sit down and play them. There's no getting around it. You want something that feels good and sounds good to your ear.
