Pictures of Matchstick Man - Was that Bubble Puppy? Can't remember...
I see a lot of old favorites on this post, a few great ones.
Little Red Riding Hood - Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs
White Knuckle Ride (Little Lady?) - Duke Jupiter
Sausalito Summer Night - Diesel
And why hasn't anybody listed
Happy Together -The Turtles...only thing I ever heard from them. Still remember the fat guy in the polka dotted hat on Ed Sullivan...
And I just picked up one of my favorite one hitters, guy named Chris Rea, excellent slide guitar player, released "The Road to Hell" in 89, the song "Texas" got a bit of airplay in Houston at the time, as well as the title track, don't know if it did much nationally, but the song Texas stuck in my head for years...really clean slide guitar, tasteful and melodic, good stuff. Found the CD a couple of days ago at a resale shop.
Here's a youtube of Texas:

Look around a bit and there's a live one of Road to Hell too.

The Turtles had quite a few other hits:
"She'd Rather Be with Me"
"You Showed Me"
Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe"
"Elenore" (sp?)
(great lyric, I might add:
"Elenore, gee I think you're swell
and you really do me well
you're my pride and joy excetra"

Good call on "Mongoose," Mary. I have that 45 around here somewhere. It was funky & rockish & oh so cool, with those odd vocals that just grabbed me at the time.
Howzabout "Turning Japanese?"
I'm trying to remember the name of the Squeeze tune what goes "Take it to the bridge/Drop it overboard/See if it can swim/Back up to the shore/No one's in the house/ Everyone is out/All the lights are on & the blinds are down" or somesuch. That was a fun one.
Pete - "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" was Status Quo. Bubble Puppy did "Hot Smoke & Sassaafrass."
"Journey To The Center Of The Mind" - Amboy Dukes
"Green Tambourine" - Lemon Pipers
"Pushin' Too Hard" - The Seeds

Thanx phil, I couldn't remember. Bubble Puppy was the only thing that came to mind.
And nobody has mentioned Wild Thing? Only thing I know of by the Troggs. Haven't even thought about Pushin too hard in a long time, but that was a good one.
Can't remember who did either, but what about Wooly Bully and Bird is the Word? Or is it just The Bird...ba ba ba ba ba ba ba bird bird bird, bird is the word...don't know who did either one, they might or might not fit in here. Just happened to think of them trying to remember some of the old one hit tunes.

Yeah, ZXYZ, Shannon by Henry Gross was his only song I know of that got radio play, but I had his album "Plug Me Into Something" and it had lot's of good songs. "Dixie Spiderman" and the title song, "Plug Me Into Something" were way cool (still are).
One of my fav one hit wonders was "Baby, It's You" by A Band Called Smith. That chick could belt it out!
BTW, "Shannon" was written about his golden retriever who swam out to sea and never came back. Kinda brings a tear to the eye and a lump to the throat, sniff, sniff.

fisherman bob wrote:"Kiss Him goodbye?" (Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye) by Steam
i remember singing that on the last bus ride home of the school year when i was in elementary and middle school.
I have that old Henry Gross LP! Loved his falsetto on that tune.
I haven't thought about "Baby It's You" in YEARS, man! That Smith chick was TALL, too! I saw them once...yeah, she had some lungs! She could sing loud, too.
The Troggs actually did have another hit. I forget the name of it, but the lyric went "It's written on the wind/It's everywhere I go/ So if you really love me/ Come on & let it show/You know I love you/I always will/My mind's made up/By the way that I feel/There's no beginning/There'll be no end/Cuz on my love you can depend" or something like that. It'd be a good loopy thing for Paul, now that I think of it.

Plug Me Into Something and another tune got a bit of airplay when I was in Norfolk in the mid 70's, always loved that album and can't find another copy these days. Henry Gross was supposed to have been guitar player for Sha Na Na earlier in his career. Several killer tunes on that album. Southern Band? Was that the name of the other tune? Can't remember...
Plug me into something, let me pick awayyyyy....
and what was the song Martin Briley did a couple of years later...been trying to think of the name of it for the past hour...GOT IT...Salt in my Tears....great song, good album, never heard from him again. But I also have a couple of albums from a group called Greenslade with Briley on bass & guitar...An earlier group he was in.

OK...........I turned on the way-back machine and came up with these:
Futures So Bright - Timbuk 3
One Simple Thing - Stabilizers
Wild Wild West - Escape Club
New Girl Now - Honeymoon Suite
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo
Broken Wings - Mister Mister
For you - Outfield
My last band used to use the Honeymoon Suite song to stump the crowd. If you knew who did it, we would give you a band T shirt. I only remember giving out one shirt. Great songs on this thread!!

Anyone have any research on an artist named
Martin Briley ??
Salt In My Tears was his Hit in the early-mid 80's .
I played this cover tune with a Top-40 band when it was popular
and never knew if he did anything before or after this tune.
This Hit was a songwriting / composition/production funky-marvel !
IMHO
