From my thirty-odd years as a musician I have concluded that only ten out of every hundred musicians has the ability to actually be a musician. Being a multi-faceted endeavor, most people may have several of the facets but lack one or two others, and these become weak links in the chain. For example, you may know how to play your instrument but be unable to get along with other musicians in a band situation. Or you may have the desire and dedication but just don't have the chops. Or you have the chops but lack dedication and would rather go to the hockey game, leaving the rest of the band hanging at rehearsal.

The Chain of Musical Success:

Talent+Knowledge+Desire+Dedication+Personality+Perseverance+Luck

I'd say Luck and manufactured music has a bigger part in it than many think these days :?

So, how would you all rate yourselves? I'll start-

Talent - 7
Knowledge - 6
Desire - 9
Dedication - 9
Personality - 6
Preseverance - 8
Luck - 3

total 48 / 7 = 6.86

hmm.. do I have what it takes?

You said 1 out of 10?
.
My experience, with the last 100 musicians and singers I talked to, worked with (or tried to work with) . . . is more like 1 in 12.
. . . maybe 8%.
.
By the way you should remove 'luck' from the list. Maybe there's luck involved in becoming famous, but there is no luck involved in becoming a good musician.
.
And you need to add creativity to that list.

what if you use luck to count in for meeting the people who help you become better musicians? or who really got you plugged into the area instead of just living there, but luck doesn't actually make your chops or technique better

Eh, 1 in 10, 1 in 12, that's splitting hairs. And luck certainly has a lot to do with becoming a successful musician, and that's what we're talking about here. Anyone can sit in their basement and claim to be a good musician. I'm lumping creativity in with talent, but feel free to expand on the chain to fit your purposes.

I'd just add that luck is a variable that changes based on action.

For instance, the guy sittin in his basement uploading great music on myspace will have less luck getting noticed than another guy with equally great music who is out busting his ass playing gigs, networking, sending press kits, etc...

The opportunist with bad luck will still beat out the lazy-ass with good luck IMO.

Okay Dokay

Was a bit over the fukin top admittedly! not one to be shy

But i have a fukin point here:

Firstly in the words of beloved Neil Young if i don't feel i ain't fukin doing it!

And more important we all have to start some-fukin-where!

My words - don't fukin come down to my level, take me up to yours!

Sum up - don't fukin slag off, help out others, or was you born with a fukin lick on you fingers
