The Tavernacle sounds like a great idea, Irm...must be fun, esp when someone asks for a Nirvana tune....LOL...reminds me of "Lounge Against the Machine!"

RM, I've run a few open mics that were only for original music...there's always someone wanting to do a "new" version of an old song, though...it gets tedious when you hafta be all nazi about it

I quite agree about the evil karaoke, folks, add DJ's to that for me...use REAL musicians!

HJ, I'd love to go to any bar tha Freeman built...I love that guy's work!

That's when it's at it's best. The last time I was there, there was a large group of office women in the front who requested Nine Inch Nails "Closer To God" ("f**k me like an animallllll"...) and the guy did a great job with it. Brought the house down.

We have a new live venue open in our small town 8K, and there are 2 others one hr from us. These are small 80 seat venues usually $20 each at the door. The acts are mid-level to high mid level in earnings. The one that is going in town is 2x month to start, with dinner and drinks, that are extra. It's been soldout for every act so far with people could from 1hr away.

NO pool tables ... NO DJ ... "JUST LIVE MUSIC".

"It's all about seeing a good performer in a intimate setting".

The night is finished off with the house band, that usually turns into a jam session with the head-liners. Also with 3 venues so close together it is easy to book the higher-end bands because they can play 3 night in a row and the 3 venues network their bookings so this can be accomplished.

The music is a big varity, blues, jazz, folk, funk, celtic, country, blue-grass, un-plugged, etc. This helps with repeat clients.

Damn, now that sounds like a great idea. You could concevably do something like that in one of the many abandoned small movie theaters.
A mix of tables to seat from two to six people. Maybe a dance floor?
I could be wrong but it would seem the folks up Canada way are more open to this type of thing.

You aren't wrong, sans, EVERYONE does it better than us, I'm ashamed to say, both in live venues & radio.

Irminsul wrote:We have something kind of novel here in Salt Lake City called The Tavernacle" (take-off on the Mormon "Tabernacle"). It's a dueling pianos bar, with two facing grand pianos where they hire players to take requests from the audience all night. It sounds silly but this thing really took off and is now in it's sixth or seventh year of business. I went there a couple of times, it's a real hoot. Almost always packed.

They do that in Ohio too.

I feel like if I were to design a club based on musical entertainment.
With a couples or small group clientel focus that it would do well.
A gated and fenced secure parking area. A stage front and center for the bands / musicians, rotate genre through out the month. A dance floor in front but slightly below the stage. Surrounded by teraced seating arranged at different elevations around the parimeter of the dance floor.
A couple of pool tables and a snack bar in the back. Collard shirt no jeans dress code, for the gents and dresses or business attire for the ladies.
What do yall think, Have I lost my mind or maybe It'll work.

Here is a story about a jazz club called the Bop Stop. It hails from Cleveland Ohio.

kareoke hurts my brain! no jean's? jean's w/collar! my idea of the perfect club: all original music and :::::::: club till 3:00 AM then Restaurant till 6:00 ..you collect the drink's at 2:55 then take order's...nobody "drives" to a restuarant, which is where 75% of the crowd goes after closing a club!
Been to Bobby Macky's....actually hired him for a show once....OOOoooOOoo scary!

In Japanesee, 'kara' mean empty.
'oke' means tub, tank, or pail.
.
You can make your own inference from that.

I always thought it meant a pallbearer at an Oklahoman's funeral.
