Don't age-discriminate, Jay hehe
Some "young ones" already know who Rollins is. Besides Black Flag which is great, he's done some awesome spoken-word material with different musicians and bands. And he's got the biggest balls of em all. Word.

The only thing that's dead about "punk" is the actual label of "punk". Just like every other genre of popular music, it's been commercialized beyond recognition. Any kid can walk into Hot Topic and buy the look, but that doesn't have to be the death of a legitimate form of expression. As long as kids stand around in basements screaming into microphones about their problems, barely able to form barre chords, the essence of "punk" will survive every generation, regardless of petty labels. As far as this whole punk vs. rap argument, I'd prefer live instruments and "screaming" over...talking over a CD any day of the week. With that being said, there is quality "Hip Hop" out there with intelligent lyrics and interesting "beats", I'm just not into it, just like I'm not into cottage cheese, stamp collecting, or "chick flicks".

Oh, just chill, HJ. I used Sabbath, Manson & Cooper merely as examples of the "evil is good" genre. That is what they were, no matter how good or bad their music, or who you may prefer. I could just as easily have added acts like Venom, who were far less famous or influential.

doc anubis - the diff between new age & new wave is vast. New wave used a lot of synth work, drum machines, a lot of electronic stuff, in a blend with more traditionally "pop" influences. New age, however, was more classically influenced, and included a slew of instrumental work, a la Yanni, John Tesh, Shadowfax, & the guitar hero Michael Hedges, along with many many other legitimate acts. It later got muddied down with morons using "environmental sounds" to enhance their poor performances & lousy compositions, but new age was originally quite musical & challenging, &, for the most part, used REAL INSTRUMENTS as opposed to sampled ones.

Far less famous? Yes.
Far less influential? No. They spawned 2 metal genres that are either still going strong [black metal] or have spawned their own derivatives [thrash spawned death metal].
Obviously, they're not as influential as Sabbath [no question], but not FAR less.
I gotta say, though, Phil, I'm impressed you even know bout Venom. I mean that's pretty extreme music lol

LOL

I tend to put religious & anti-religious music in the same category - stuff I don't listen to.

The only reason I ever knew about Venom was cuzza some born-again friends trying to scare me into Christianity by showing me the innumerable enemies of it all...bad approach, btw. I have at least one LP on their list that is quite near & dear to my heart - "666" by Aphrodite's Child. That Vangelis-driven album was written for some foreign movie about witches or something, I think, but it had some incredible tracks on it, & Demis Roussous' vocals are way eerie & impossible to cover, too.

In general, the "evil is good" stuff has always made me sorta smile indulgently at the adolescent minds that create it, & it never impressed me much, cuz I know it just ain't so.

I don't watch Rob Zombie movies either...

I have to say Sabbath rocked for me. They weren't trying to be a "great" band they just gave what came from within.
The Who were somewhat punk in their beginning but completely sold out to make a buck (and who's to blame the broke ass f**k)

Social Distortion was a lil more pure along with Black Flag/Dead Kennedies.
I never cared for Suicidal Tendencies who were revered in the late 80's and somehow people called em Punk. I saw em once and we gave em a lotta sh*t.

PUNK WILL NEVER DIE... it's just fade in & out like most genre's.

can you picture me with five 30" multi colored Liberty Spikes?
Yup, I had em
