Oingo Boingo was pure gay dance music...& I loved some of it.

Hard to believe it was the same songwriter what did the Simpsons & the Batman movies & the Beetlejuice themes, though.

Go to youtube and listen to Time Bomb by Rancid. That is ska. Also look up The Bouncing Souls. Good luck with your search.

I love Ska!
Got anywhere with this yet?

Anyone in a ska band or trying to put one together who has tips about collecting a horn section? We have vocals, guitar and bass but still need a drummer and horns and are having trouble finding some. How do you guys go about finding people; where are these musicians hiding?? =P

Thanks in advance!

I'd check with local schools and colleges. Lots of horns in the marching bands and all.

Yah see!
This is one I missed! Absolutely. Listen to Copeland and work out if you know where he is coming from?

I think his take is missing out stuff/beats. It must be natural because what he plays is outlandish.

Ska originated in Jaimaca, it came from Calypso and American jazz/swing and r and b. the original sound died out in the 60s when Reggae was born, which was basicly ska just layed back with more funkier and deeper rhythmic arrangements.

if you could say it got 'whiter and whiter' after the 2-tone era (the late 70s/early 80s, where the Specials and Madness revived the traditional sound). then after American bands like Fishbone and Bosstones added more electric guitar/punk to it in the mid 80s to early 90s, since this was the more 'popular' sound, people took it as the real thing, hence why people mistake "Reel Big Fish' or anything "Punk With Horns" is considered 'Ska". Less than Jake for instance, is 'punk with horns' they do not consider them selves a ska band, though there is an influence.

Hope my exlpaination, clears any confusion up!

Hi Dan.
Were you in the UK at about the 70's/80's period.
I've seen all of the bands you've mentioned and many, many more.

haha, no, im 22, and im american, and unfortunately was never able to experience that era of music physically. im just a very big fan of the late 70s New Wave/Punk era and Ska Music. :)

the only one of the New Wave era i was able to see live now, is good ole Elvis Costello. 8)

i really wish i was there to see all those great bands emerge.

Which were your favorites??

Oops. :D
Gee that is a very difficult question. I really liked The Beat with 'Rankin Roger'. Very political group in some ways but then they all were to differing degrees, I found their music a little dark in character and meaning sometimes. The Specials were something else, truly an art form in their own right. I was not a great fan of Madness but you couldn't deny them success after success but they were more dancy.

Selector was a special favourite for many reasons. There were of course tons of one hit wonders with spin off songs. Of course you cannot forget the splurge of Police stuff too. To be completely honest this list has to be endless for me since I liked songs from all of these people and some spin off's too.

I'd have to go for the Specials however. They could cause a riot just by standing there. What a presence they had and still going too apparently.

Very difficult question in my case, probably all of it. :D
