I guess mine was in the lawn between 2 apartment buildings in Columbus on High st... Nobody seemed to mind. there were 2 other bands openeing for us. My producer at the time (Nelson Slaghter) was close friends with Lou Reed and was known to pull off some crazy sh*t. Well I was more than a lil surprised when we arrived. I thought we were picking up a soundman or something. He said ok Your going to set up your gear right there so that when theyre done you can just pick up/turn on and go... Hey man, this is a yard, what are all o these tenants going to think... they'll think you guys are great!.. We played till 3 am.
Ole Nelson... ya just gotta love him!

This man's a real trooper. Going out of your way like you did will just about gurantee you gigs forever with those people. I'll bet you even surprised yourself.
I'm going to agree with George on this one. While I think it's great that you covered the gig, think about it: You replaced the musicians with canned music, and when you did play, it was a solo gig. You also seem very happy with the fact that the club owners want to book JUST you...
Your bandmates aren't going to thank you for that. I'm kind of suprised by the amount of support you've recieved here on this, as we've had this type of discussion many times, and most of us seem to agree that DJ's and solo acts are killing oppurtunities for bands (I thought that's what the agreement was, anyway).
The fact that it's "one of our own" doing it doesn't make it okay.
The fact that you had a blast doing it doesn't make it okay.
Call me an a$$hole, if ya want, but I feel like it's the same attitude that too many people have: "It's wrong until I do it, then it's okay."
Right now, those club owners are thinking "Why should we pay a band when one guy can come in with his CD player and do it all?" This is exactly the reason that, in my area, a band can barely get a gig.
DJ's, Karaoke, solo acts and free open mics. Oh, and don't let me forget...Elvis Impersonators. Yeah.

I don't think jw123 is going to go solo any time soon. I believe it was something he did to honor his commitment of a gig. It's highly doubtful the venue is all of a sudden going to start booking solo acts. Correct me if I'm wrong jw123, I don't think you're the kind to screw your bandmates out of a future gig....
Damn, Joe...while I agree with you in general, I also realize that this was JW's way of fulfilling his OBLIGATION to present a party atmosphere. I personally wouldn't have done the DJ thing, but I can do a 4 hour solo set. If JW can't, I think he went the distance for the venue in his own way & made things work out for them, in spite of his band being a no-show.
I would NEVER let a band hurt my rep by not showing if I could avoid it.
I think he did the right thing under the circumstances, when you consider the limitations & abilities he had to deal with. He entertained. He was a success for both himself AND the venue who hired him. He earned his pay, & the bar was happy in spite of the no-show.
Yeah, DJ'ism sucks, but there are times that extreme measures need to be taken to fulfill an obligation, & JW went the distance with a positive attitude, & a good time was had by all in spite of the weather.
If they want him to keep entertaining so bad, since he's so good at it, no need to worry, cuz they'll surely hire his band when everyone can be there, I'm sure. And once they see his act, they'll forget & forgive the DJ thing along with the rest of us, hopefully.
It's easy to sit on our high horses & bitch about DJ's & karaoke & stuff, but in the end, it comes down to the same age-old question; WAS THE ACT ENTERTAINING? That is the single most important part of our jobs as musicians. We need to be entertainers FIRST, & world class musicians, second, more often than not. It certainly sounds like JW fit the bill & created a party all by himself.
Kudos are in order, Joseph, not jeers.

I have been playing in bands entertaining and playing music in clubs for 30 years this year and I still learn a lot from you guy's. You are right on with what you said philby and FB. I love it philby

As I try so hard to be the best musician I can be even now after all these years, the nights that I stand there like a zombie whippin out the best licks and playing everything to absolute perfection I look up to a dead crowd, but as soon as I loosen up start moving around and actin a fool the crowd goes crazy with mistakes and all.

I can't tell you how many times we played a song to perfection and got zero crowd response and how many times I thought we were stinking up the place and the crowd went crazy for us. Us musicians have a higher expectation of what we perceive as playing something perfect than the listening audience. Most of the audience doesn't really know or care what's perfect and what isn't, they just want to be entertained. There's almost no rhyme or reason to which shows people love and which shows people don't care for. Maybe in the studio you should play something to perfection but on stage it doesn't really make any difference (as long as you're not too sloppy). People just want to have fun. If you're on stage having fun that's what really counts the most. The audience can sense it.

Joeseph all I can say is if the bands are so bad in your area that they cant get gigs over a DJ or Karoake then they must really suck!
Most of the places I play have Karaoke one night, a DJ another night, a band night, even trivia nights.
I have no intention of quitting my band, on the other hand I have a couple of free nights a week and a local little club that would allow me to put on my own show of some sort. I may try it a couple of times. I am first and foremost an entertainer. My job in my band is to entertain people and I do it well.
Once again I made the best of a bad situation, if you dont have the ability to overcome sh*t like this happening then maybe you should just go back to McDonalds where someone lays it all out for you. I made my mind up years ago noone was going to tell me how to fix fries again!

I'm with FB and philby here, JW fulfilled an obligation, made the customers and the club happy, and he didn't have to tell me he didn't plan to drop his band for a solo gig, I knew that wouldn't happen, he likes the band too much and is very dedicated to it.
We have the same situation here, band one night, karioke the next, (did I spell that right?) and the bands are suffering for it, but on the flip side, most of the bands are mediocre at best. Drunk by the 3rd set, sloppy playing, 2 minutes or more between songs because none of them bother to make up a set list, no front man to get the crowd's attention and hold it, same song list they've played for the past 4 years with very little new material....
So while the bands are suffering, I can't blame the club owners, the bands haven't made themselves indispensable. They have actually made themselves easily replaceable. Sorry if some of you guys have a problem with DJ's, but the fact is the bands made it possible. If you play drunk every night, take ages between songs, never upgrade your song list and can't keep the crowd's attention in the first place, soon as a good DJ comes along and the club owner finds out it's cheaper he may like live bands, but he has to look at what the bands have been doing...Guess who's going to lose...
JW didn't become a DJ and is not going to, he simply made the best of a bad situation, stepped in sh&t and came out smelling like a rose. I would have done the same thing, but in my case I always have an acoustic with me for gigs and could have done some acoustic stuff if necessary. I might not have done as well, I'm not the talker he is, but I would have at least tried it. The option is pissing the club owner off and losing a gig altogether. I think he did great.

That's how I see it too.
On the other hand:
Do you think women find a guitarist or a DJ sexier?
I gotta think about the whole picture here!
On the musician side of the coin, my off nights lately Ive been doing some Original recording. I pretty much laid down all my guitar parts on a slow song last night at our bassist studio. All I have is a rough mix without real drums. We used a drum machine to lay it out. I sang it, but Im not the greatest singer as some of you know, but I give it the ole try now and then.
As said above I have no intention of quitting my band!
We are family, I got all my bros and me!
